Issues with 4x4

Ok. Ive got a problem...

1999 Limited 4x4 issues

1. when trying to switch on the fly, all i get is a loud grinding noise, then a thud and then I have no power to any wheels, its like I'm sitting in neutral

2. when switching into 4h or 4l, you hear 4x4 engage. but there is no power to the front wheels.

Last week when I CO, I had 4runner in 4L w/ rear diff locked, all lights on dash showed I was in 4x4... all wheels green and center diff orange... I was climbing snowy icy hill... Rear tires were spinning but when looking at front tires, they were doing nothing...

I have been searching the threads, my head is spinning with vacuum lines, actuators, transfer case and front diff information...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kinda sounds like the transfer case is not in a happy place after reading you said it grinded going in and then no power at all. I would check the fluid for the tcase and report back.

These systems are pretty much a sure thing.

It sounds like your transfer case grenaded

4runner taken too hospital... Toyota mechanic with multiple references... Co-worker swears by him... So far, so good...

Finally have time and money to get this checked out.... Transfer case (toasted), currently in shop getting new (used) one..

At the same time, rear axle seal, boots, brakes getting done....

Only thing to address after this, 6112's up front, 5100 in rear, new rear springs and New UCA (not sure which ones yet)

Gonna be a pricey stop but, feel it's well worth it
