JDM Engine issues

I just finished my jdm engine swap. I can get it to start sometimes but others it just cranks. When it does start it runs really rough at lower rpms, and ok but not great at higher rpms.
It shoots A LOT of white smoke from the engine bay, and from the exhaust. If I don't rev it when it starts it will sputter then die.
If I do rev it it will run rough at idle by itself, then I turn it off and when I try to restart it, it won't start. It doesn't have any codes showing or even pending.

Any ideas on where I could start looking? I put new spark plugs in and it made it a little better.

Since you are seeing white smoke, I would check the plugs to see if they are wet with coolant. If they are, a compression test would need to be done next. You may have a head gasket leak.

Seem's like lately a lot of people are having issues with JDM engines...

probably not your issue, but did you replace the JDM injectors with USDM ?

do a compression test

Sounds like a bad crank sensor or cam sensor or maybe a bad cap and rotor?

Crank or cam sensor is what I thought of too. But there is soooooo much white smoke I think it might have something to do with the problem.

I alway replace them when I do a swap you can try and swap them out with your old ones and see what the deal is... is it kind of back firing at time how about you post up a video of it

I'll upload a video to youtube then put it on here, should just be a couple minutes

Umm did you hook up the vac hose on the Throttlebody in the right place and hook up the coolant lines to the right place in the Throttlebody? Had a buddy to that one time and ran about like that

I'm pretty sure I have everything hooked up on the throttlebody correctly. I'll double check tomorrow just to be sure

  • What gaskets did you replace?
  • What sensors did you swap from your USDM engine?
  • Did you replace or inspect the knock sensor harness?
  • Did you replace the timing belt and water pump?
  • Did you inspect the valves and pistons through the intake/exhaust ports?

1. Replaced intake manifold/plenum gaskets
2. I used most of the sensors from the JDM engine
3. I used the JDM knock sensors, I forgot to plug them back in during those videos and I got a misfire code for every cylinder along with knock sensor bad codes.
4. The timing belt and water pump are the ones that came with the JDM engine.
5. I did inspect them and they looked good, a little dirty but Vacuumed them out as best as possible with my shop vac before reassembly.

Comments below..

1. Replaced intake manifold/plenum gaskets

- Thats it? What about when you switched the oil cooler to the USDM location? And when you switched the oil pan and strainer? Valve cover gaskets and spark plug gaskets would have been a good idea when its out...

2. I used most of the sensors from the JDM engine

- I'm sorry I think this was a mistake. These engines come from different vehicles and I am not sure they are the same as USDM. That is a big unknown, the ECU's used in those cars could have used those sensors differently. I know the ECT, coolant, knock, oil pressure, cam and crank sensors looked identical but without part numbers on them we dont know.

3. I used the JDM knock sensors, I forgot to plug them back in during those videos and I got a misfire code for every cylinder along with knock sensor bad codes.

- I would suggest double and triple checking everything now. Compression test would really tell you a lot without much effort.

4. The timing belt and water pump are the ones that came with the JDM engine.

- If everything looked good I guess, but now would have been the time to replace anyways. I would have at least made sure it was timed right.

Is there anything I could've hooked up wrong to cause that much smoke? Or is it most likely an issue with the engine itself
