The Fiat-Chrysler CEO says the emissions control defeat in question is there to prevent damage to the engine and not to get around emissions restrictions, so they weren't required to disclose it to the EPA during testing and shouldn't be fined.

This is what happens when you hit automakers with overburdening emissions and safety restrictions - they're going to cheat to get around them.

I remember hearing the EPA put up big roadblocks and delays to revamp the testing for the Colorado Duramax since it will still under review for US release.. Looks like they have now had time to go back and test some that had already been approved before the VW cheat was discovered.

I read this a while back. It's not necessarily that Fiat is trying to skirt the EPA/CARB rules by manipulating the emissions system to beat the test, like VW. They failed to notify the agency of different parameters within the system that dictates how the emission system operates in certain scenarios.. The difference here is that it doesn't look like an act (based on my reading) of deception, but on incompetence. They straight up failed to supply the epa with the exact specs of the system and it's operating processes in a timely manner.

Now, if it comes out that this failure to provide this information was due to the fact they were trying to hide something... well then. We know where this is going.

But I bet they get a slap on the wrist, but I don't expect this to be like VW.

If Trump's pick to head the EPA is any indication of what's to come, this might become a minor issue, if one at all.

(Not tryin' to start a flame war :vader:, or tryin' to judge... just callin' it as I see it and as I think it's likely to be.)

Seem right on topic to me.

Can't tell you how many posts here about the dream of a diesel in a 5th gen and all the talk about why Toyota won't bring the diesels they have to the US market. This is great evidence to prove how hard core the EPA currently is and even how it may be changing....

Also, many people directly compare the Jeep GC to the 5th gen....

But I guess more threads about light bars, rims, running boards, and 5100s and what setting... would be more relevant to the 5th gen section. We really need more of those ;-)

Lol, thats a stretch and 5th gen isnt mentioned anywhere in the OP.

And yes, the aggressive nature of EPA regs sucks. I too expect changes soon.
 
I bet there are plenty of GC owners tired of their truck being in the shop who would love to have Jeep have to buy it back

In other words they're hopeful that these regs are rolled back and it becomes moot. I'm sure they'll point out how many factory jobs they've kept in the good ol' USA.

You'd be surprised. Even with all of the documented issues, Wrangler owners cant wait to have the diesel option later this year.

I for one can't wait until I, as a free American, am allowed to breath all the particulate and soot I want without those pesky regulations. I can almost taste victory.

When I was young, my folks had a 1979 Oldsmobile 98 Diesel.

GM basically took a 350 V8, made a few tweaks, and called it a Diesel.

It got GREAT gas mileage (true!), and was lighting fast (NOT!) 0 to 60 MPH in about 16.5 seconds (not kidding!), and when you stepped on it, it put out a cloud of black soot so thick and voluminous that it made the photo above look like fresh mountain air!

One day while cruisin' down a country road, this open-air jeep started to tailgate me, and for quite a while too. Eventually I had enough, so....

I FLOORED IT! ... and watched them disappear as they dropped WAY WAY BACK to avoid breathing in the noxious cloud of smoke.

These engines were nothin' like the Mercedes Blu Tecs of today... and they lasted to about 35K miles before they blew. We pulled the diesel and put a real V8 in it!

I think most Americans, myself included, are generally in favor of emissions regulations. You don't have to spend very long in Paris or any Asian city to appreciate the benefits of our emissions laws. The EPA does some nonsensical things for sure. But I'm don't think the emissions standards are one of them. I'm certainly not an eco-nazi. Just someone who likes clean air.
