Job Thread

Noticed we dont have one of these and not sure if any other truck forum has one either since i frequent this one primarily.

As a soon to be graduate of the Univ California system, a member of todays not so great economy, and like anyone with a brain between their ears, its fairly easy to see that jobs are pretty hard to come by.

I think we should have a thread (this one) that posts possible employment openings that we could refer members/friends/family to.

I don't want you guys to think im asking for a favor, since ive been doing a lot of homework on federal, state, county, city, and private jobs. Just want to create a thread that can help people out.

I dont have any direct connections to actual employment opportunities but i'll go ahead and post USAJOBS.gov as a pretty good resource for federal jobs.

I'll add Aviation jobs and Aviation employees JSfirm to the list of awesome resources to jobs. This site is more aviation specific but they have aviation jobs all around the world.

Can you say what specifically is your major?

Do you know about BLS.gov's website? You can use it + google to look up salary and job projections for your field. Also be sure to pay attention to the actual number of jobs employed by that field. The United States graduates A LOT more psychology majors than the economy can support. That is why so many end up working retail at Target after graduating. It sucks but its the truth. The rich kids who don't find a job just end up living at home until their 30s.

I'd highly highly highly suggest that if you are not a STEM major right now that you consider doing an about face and changing to a STEM major. As long as you are still a student and haven't graduated .... it is never too late.

One bit of serious advice
UC Irvine will allow you to change your major and switch to a STEM major, even if you are a Senior. You may want to take some of the math classes (up through Calc II) at community college so as not to spend the money. Once you graduate the path choices to get back in will be limited.

Yup. Great resource for finding a path.

Im just under the school of biological sciences, ive noticed way more jobs want a little specialization so i plan to take some other specific courses that arent offered at my campus.

Very true about the psychology and target thing, however i think its mostly the psychology and social behavior side and not cognitive science psychology that is too abundant..

Biology is tough man, jobs wise ... With only a BS your outlook is not very great, even from a good school.

I've know quite a few bio majors. Its pretty common major in San Diego.

Yea it is.. I took a course in it, hated it. Hah, definitely not for me.
I plan to get more courses in the ecology part of bio, and go for that side of it.

Not California, but the company I work for in Tulsa, OK is looking for TWO Engineering Interns with AutoCAD and Solidworks skills.

Both of those interests can be tied together as a game warden. Most states are finding it tough to get decent applicants. Here in MN, a recent plan to hire 26 Conservation Officers was cut down to 10 because there weren't enough applicants with clean backgrounds.

On USAjobs, I'd look at the following agencies:

USDA - Forest Service
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Bureau of Land Management
National Park Service
NOAA (they do a lot more than weather forecasting - look specifically at NOAA Fisheries)

Getting into federal law enforcement is tough right now if you're not a veteran - tons of them are getting out of the military and applying. However, if you can get your foot in the door as a biologist, you can move into law enforcement in any of these agencies later on. Or, simply remain a biologist. Either way, you're helping the resource, which is the overall mission.

My company typically has plenty of postings in the Benefits Administration industry. We have major offices in a few states, smaller offices in many more states, were on the top 20 list for companies with a virtual presence (I've been working with them as a virtual employee for about 4 and a half years now), and also international jobs.
