Judging other T4Rs on the road. What do you do?

I'm wondering how other folks judge the other 4Runners you see before you get up close and see the driver. This is a tongue-in-cheek thread but I realized that I totally expect to see the following drivers when I approach these different rigs. Sorry in advance if anyone gets offended.

Limited - High maintenance tennis / soccer mom.

Stock Trail Edition - Late 30s to 50s male; probably has extended warranty and never is late on a service. Radio playing local news/talk.

SR5 w/ Tires, Lightbar - Late 20s male, probably has an Instagram account and "vapes."

Modified Trail Edition - Early 30s male, goes "overlanding" to the lake campground on the weekends, some kind of "expedition" sticker on a window.

TRD Pro - Affliction T-shirt; previously owned a modified WRX.

Its not a bad list, I just remember to thank them for helping with the sales numbers to keep the platform alive. If they relied on the "heavy users" it would have been dead long ago.

I would sort of fit the "Modified Trail" (suspension and mats) category, except for the fact that if I actually went to the lake campground, I might get it dirty.... that is unacceptable.

Limited - Anyone who like a bit of luxury but does not want to spend too much going into a Lexus. Or, people "in the know about FT 4WD."
Stock Trail - People who know a bit and enjoy going off road, or attracted to anything with a hood scoop.
Modded Trail - People who go off road or Posers who think the grass at the mall is off road.
TRD Pro - Enjoy paying MSRP for stuff. Usually trade vehicles every few years for the "next big thing" with no regard to brand, reliability or durability. Looks really matter to them.

So which one are you ... the stock or modified TE?

Stock TE, but I take it even further and I'm only 32. When the dealer finishes servicing mine and tops the tires off to 34psi I drop them down to 32psi because that's what the door placard says. It has to be the next morning though, with a full night to ensure absolute cold pressure.


One modification to the list - anything with a permanently installed roof-top-tent is a 10x points adder to its respective category.

I usually don't pass judgement on people until their actions deem it necessary and you will need, at a minimum, atrac and a locker on the mall grass if you go wheeling there in the morning. The dew on the grass at that time is a game changer.

Modded TEP with the stickers and try to find real trail as often as I can. No malls for me lol. And I'm early 30's. so I guess I'm in the modded trail edition. Great topic. Lots of fun.

And yes extended warranty and yes.. schedule service 100 miles before it's due.

Can usually be seen absolutely spotless and detailed with NFabs and a Gobi rack at your local outdoor mall fully articulating on parking blocks. Hehe I'm the very lightly modded TE. The scoop is cool, I'm early 30's no stickers tho, I have seen all the Expedition Overland episodes of once, and I listen to talk radio but not NPR. Oh and not part of the "master race"
