Just found out my truck does not have original transmission!!!!

I decided to finally register in the Toyota Owners website and put in my VIN. Upon reviewing the service history, I discovered the original transmission had an internal failure (customer reported it would not shift to reverse) and needed to be replaced. Customer DENIED this service. A hundred miles later it was replaced with a USED transmission as per customer request. THIS HAPPENED LESS THAN 1000 MILES BEFORE I BOUGHT IT! I am shocked, although somewhat relieved this was done at a Toyota Dealership, and the fact that the last 15,000 miles I have been driving it have been flawless. What do you guys think? Should I call the dealer that replaced the transmission and try to find out more details?

I would, :rockthrow:

I wouldn't worry about it. If it was half assed then there would be symptoms, but you said it sounds and works fine. I'd see if there extended warranty on used one they put in, if not dont sweat it. GL

If anything, I would like to see if I can find out how many miles the transmission they put in has on it, or maybe any of their service staff remembers dealing with the PO. This only happened about a year and a half ago according to the records.

You can try, but they may not tell you much of anything. Frankly I wouldn't worry about it if the trans is working fine

The dealer here gets a lot of parts from the junk yards, they don't get rebuilt transmissions. It may or may not have higher mileage than stock as long as it looks good and works. I doubt their records will tell you much about the transmission such as mileage, but you can ask.

NO.

There us literally NOTHING to be done at this point. This is kinda like trying to fix the barn door after you lost all your horses. You should have done this work before you bought your truck... at this point, it doesn't matter.

You appear to have a fully functioning transmission. Stop worrying. Plus, what would the dealer actually tell you? What are you looking for? Their are privacy laws to be aware of. I know we WANT all the info, but you don't have a right to intrude on another customers records. The dealer MAY or MAY NOT tell you anything.

So. Stop sweating it. Take this as a lesson to learn to do due diligence before hand.
Be glad you appear to have a great transmission and take it at that.

I agree with DC. You have a transmission and it works. It isn't like the original transmission had a special kind of love relationship with the motor or the transfer case that putting in a sub would make any difference. Just be thankful that they had the decency to replace it with a working unit and not try to stick you with their problem. Things break and they get replaced. No big deal.

The only thing I would want to know is was out a used Trans or rebuilt

Curious what you would prefer. Personally I'd rather have a used. My experience with rebuilt transmissions hasn't been great. At least with a used I would assume the car got totaled but the transmission was working properly beforehand.

Well Most of the rebuilts we use at our dealership have a couple year warranty from the company we contract through. If it was a rebuilt then I'd like to know the warranty just in case something happened, it might be the difference between buying a new transmission and just paying a deductable.

Also if it was a used transmission, I'd be more concerned if it was a high mileage, little maintained unit. But the truth is, you'll never find out its previous history if its a used unit, so just be happy it works for now.

It is good that you are not having any problems with it but if it were me I would try to find out everything I could about it.

You dont know what you dont know and what you dont know could cost you in the future. It shouldnt take much energy to research this with the dealer.

Yeah I'm not stressing over it, and definitely don't regret buying it. I was just shocked to learn this. The dealer that replaced the transmission is not the one I bought the truck from and I am not looking for any type of refund. Just possibly more information. I'm not trying to dig into customer records, just talk to someone who may have dealt with the PO when this happened. Thanks for the responses so far. I may give them a call tomorrow.
