just ordered my vortex muffler!

ya $20 is a really good price and if anyone can get it for that price i say go and do it! lol. i wasnt that fortunate but i dont mind shelling out $40 to make my car sound this good. So total i spend just over $85 to buy my muffler, ship it, get my old one removed and wrapped and get my new one installed. Thats pretty dang good considering my clear corners and turn sigs were like nearly $50. hahaha.

Well they charge $85 an hour for labor and they estimated it would only take half an hour and to cut the old one off and weld the new one in so they made it $42.50 which seemed fair enough to me so i went for it. You can prolly get that kind of price at other places too but these guys did a good job on my dads lift so i figured they're worthy of doing my exhaust. Plus my friends dual exhaust he put on his Ranger sounds awesome and i knew they did a good job.

Because I just called, and they quoted me at $85 to do the job.
 
Ehh nevermind, I just went and did it. Haha. Seemed a bit much, but whatever.

Question about the Vortex though, for anyone to answer:

Did your shift points change after installation of the vortex?

Also, while I was driving back, I noticed that while the car was moving and the tachometer needle was falling, once it hit like 1.5k, it would immediately spike up to 1.7k. Has anyone experienced this?

Hmmm I didn't keep track. But it revs to a higher rpm before shifting though.

Seriously, no one is getting a random spike while cruising without the foot on the gas pedal? My theory is that the vortex produces less back pressure in the exhaust piping, so as the engine whines down and doesn't sense the resistance, it would rev itself to give it that back pressure its use to. I dunno, maybe I'm just rambling. Hopefully, it'll go away. Or maybe I'll just reset the intake system via the fuse box.

I didn't monitor my shift points pre-Vortex either, but like longeeMAC, the engine now revs to a higher RPM before shifting. I remember saying to myself on the drive home after the install that it was taking longer for the transmission to shift gears and wondered how a muffler swap could effect something like that.
 
Sorry I hadnt responded, i havnt been on here in awhile. I cant say though that I've noticed any odd shifting. The only thing I havt noticed is something of a drone at about 1700-1800rpm. To compensate for that I either accelerate easily and my car will shift just under that or else if i accelerate a little faster it just passes it right up so i've learned to drive w/o hearing it (even though i didnt have to change my driving style much because i already drive that way)

I have to say though aside from that slight "drone" i totally love it. I live in sunny San Diego and so driving with all the windows down sounds awesome with this muffler.

And about paying $85 to get it installed, i told the guy that i was quoted at $45 at another shop and so he then said "Fine, i'll charge you $42.50 so there I win." and when he said that I said sure i'll take it. I just figured he cut his hourly price in half cuz it should only take about a half hour to complete ya know? Did you tell him that someone you knew got it done for half the price? He prolly woulda matched it. Randy is a pretty nice guy that way.

So to recap, no my shifts have not changed. I love the muffler (it is pretty potent but by no means obnoxious) There is a slight drone kind of noise between 1700-1800 rpm but its very easy to live with.

I've composed a couple of short videos of different scenarios driving with the muffler and now i'm just trying to edit them to make them one so its easier. I'll post it once I get it done.

I have the same drone at around 1700-1800 rpms, I imagine other people have experienced the same.
 
Ya I was surprised by the droning at first cuz no one ever mentioned anything about it, but after about a week of driving it settled down a lot. IDK if its just cuz I was getting used to it or because the muffler was just breaking in but I hardly notice the droning at all now, but like I said I've learned to drive around that problem so i dont really hear it anymore.

And I'm going to have to use my friends comp to do the video editing, i dont have that kind of software on my laptop, dang. lol
 
I tried to notice when it shifted today and I thought the points were 2,050, 2,100, 2,300, and 2,150. That is under slight accleration.

Do you know Dualtone shop in SD? I went there and the guy there told me since I'm not buying their product and only using their service, my job is put on low priority. So anyone who buys their stock will have priority over me at installation. I went in around noon, and he told me that they close at 5p, so they get it done before they close definitely. I didn't get why he said that, because I'm still a customer.

I may have the drone at 1700rpm also. But I'm not quite sure what you guys mean by drone. I hear a humming all the time. Is the droning sound a louder deeper hum?

I'm going to have to get back to you on this. But then again, shift points at different depending on if your on a cold start or warm start right?

Wow thats really lame, although i guess they're just looking to make more money. By them saying if you buy OUR product we'll do it for you now but since you bought it somewhere else we'll do it for you if we have time, thats just them frustrated they couldnt make a real SALE, now they can only charge you for labor and stuff. (at least thats how i see it)

Its really apparent if you drive with the windows down. You can hear the real nice throaty sound of your muffler then when it gets to that 1700rpm marker it kind of sounds like it vibrates a little louder, like the frequency changes. That rev range might be the fundamental frequency with our motor using that muffler application which is why the sound tends to amplify. I remember learning about it in physics awhile ago, but i could be wrong about it all. lol. But i def do know a higher sound at 1700rpm and its not nearly as bad of a drone as I hear in other cars, i just think its a smallish one...if there is such thing. :p

Yep, I agree with you.

Now I see. Yeah, then I do hear the drone around the 1700rpm. Also, I think you may be right bout the resonance, nice connection with academics, I didn't think about that. I actually like the drone. Maybe that's just me. It sounds nice and loud.

Ya for sure! Makes it sound even better than normal. lol. Only when I was driving home from my ucsd when I had a migrane it wasnt very fun. So i just sped up a little bit so i didnt have to hear it. lol

No I dont go there, i go to a community college. (Grossmont and Cuyamaca actually) I was just driving home from visiting a friend out there. And ya I have 4 differential Equation hmw assignments I have to do by tomorrow, i'm doing a really good job of NOT doing them. hahaha
