Just swapped motors, very rough 3.4.. No CEL

I'm not sure how the piston could contact either of the valves since the 3.4 is a non interference motor but I'm no engine expert or pretend to be.

It's too bad that motor isn't working right because that valve train looks very clean.

Oh i just assumed it was an interference motor.

Thats good to hear but makes it more puzzling that both valves are stuck open.


Ill be check the exhaust valves and ports for obstructions.. its a possibility since something could have found its way in there rolling around the wrecking yard with the valves open

More progress from this evening... Valves seem to be stuck open for no good reason as far as i can tell. Cylinder walls look good..

happy with what im seeing so far. Ill get the head in to the machine shop tomorrow

Let us know how the head turns out. It looks quite clean. The PO looked liked they were diligent in changing the oil regularly.

One of those times when I'd almost recommend a 'snake oil' like SeaFoam or Marvel Mystery Oil. Supposed to work very well to help stuck valves. Just let it soak in for a while.
I know it's a bit too, late as it's torn down now, but food for thought.

I hammered on them with a screwdriver handle and they didnt budge. I was tempted to spray it down with lube and try to get them free..

This is also my wife\family favorite ride and she takes it everywhere and on long trips so I really want to do it right.

Got it back on the road.. Still have to adjust the transmission fluid level to get it perfect.

The machine shop said it looked great, the valve guides were just dry..not even dirty, so he cleaned them, put new valve seals on that cylinder and it was done. Head was straight, didnt even need to be decked. Funny because the wrecking yard said it was a common problem that the valves get dry and hang up at first. Who woulda thought.

Ill get some better and more recent pics up whenever I take them here soon.


Initial test firing

Took the ride on a trip to go see the dead and company (remainder of grateful dead) near San Francisco, took the 1 home, watched some whales on the drive.. 500 mile trip went over without a hitch!

A few hundred miles after returning from the trip the 4runner developed a nasty missfire, sounded like rod knock and we feared the worst. I checked the spark plugs and one of them had the center electrode (and porcelain) break off.

Apparently it ate the plug.

Put a new set of plugs in and luckily everything is great.
