Just when I though my sunroof problems were over...

Well, this morning I decided to be a nice guy and meet my mom at the BMW dealer to see what was going on with her car. I was bragging to the dealer how my Toyota never has these problems and has not been back at the dealer for months. Well, I spoke too soon. After I leave there, we go to a diner to get a quick breakfast before I go to college. It was a beautiful day so I had the sunroof open. I get there and go to close the sunroof, but it won't close. I try re-starting my truck and re-setting the automatic windows, but it still won't close. After holding the button forcefully for a few seconds, I get it to close. The sunroof now does not open automatically or open or close with an easy push of the button. You have to jam your thumb down on the switch to make it close. So, now my 4Runner is sitting at the dealer waiting to be looked at. They couldn't get a mechanic on it today. They told me I should have it back on Wednesday. At least my sunroof worked good for 3 months. I guess the moral of the story is not to brag about your 4Runner at a competitor's dealer!!!

Did you reset the windows or the moonroof? I've had 2 different problems with mine. One required the dealer having to replace my sunroof switch and the other one was resetting the moonroof auto function. Just hold the "Tilt Up" button until it closes, tilts up and then makes a "adjustment" noise.

I tried both. I was afriad to play with the sunroof too much because to open and close it, you had to really push the switch with force. It is weird because it opened normally and it was only a 1.5 mile trip. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. The dealer told me over the phone that it could be a fuse. I just laughed.

Dealers...they come up with the weirdest excuses. I had one sales rep try to tell me I had to replace my windshield if I wanted to install a NAV system...

Sorry to hear about your problem. I think the moonroof is the one disappointing thing on my car. Compared to the other ones I've used, this one is flimsy, has poor seals, and has more rattles and opening/closing problems. The wind deflector flops around while I'm driving. I'm also very disappointed in the sunshade, it's so light a bump in the road could cause it to move. I really wish Toyota had spent more time designing the moonroof. Don't get me wrong, I love having it, it just doesn't scream "quality" like the rest of the car.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on. I hope you get your truck back all fixed and without any problems and good luck in college!

Thanks tkr128!! What you said makes a lot of sense. I agree with you about the moonroof. It is made like garbage and for what it costs as an option, it should be made better. My wind deflector doesn't sound too good and when I accidently touched it, I thought I broke it it flopped so much. My sunshade could slide all the way into the headliner if I am not careful when pushing it back. It feels as thin as paper. I hope it is an easy fix and they don't try coming up with a lame excuse in why it doesn't work.

My dealer would also tell me something like that about the NAV. Maybe the next thing they will tell me is I need the engine running to operate the sunroof!!!

Well, dealer called today and told me that now the switch was working fine. They said they are replacing the switch though because it is probably a short in the switch.

Doesn't it seem odd that they say it's working fine, then contradict themselves in teh next sentence? If it has a short, then it's not fine!!

Switches usually fail open...

I have seen ONE shorted switch in my life, and I have diagnosed 100's, no joke. Every switch failure except ONE, has been a broken piece of plastic or a worn out contact.

Internally, some piece of the plastic or contact is broken. The one short failure in a switch I have seen was a piece of the metal rocker contact had snapped internally and WELDED itself sideways between the power side and the output side. This was on a 120VAC copier power switch. It was triple pole , single throw.

The only other shorts I have ever diagnosed have been wire insulation worn through and shorted to another part of the circuit, usually the chassis (ground), intermittently.

And I have seen one shorted resistor on a fan speed PCB. That was freaky hard to diagnose.
