KDSS - Bilstein 6112 Installation - Upper Shock Mounts

Hey Everyone!

I tried searching for information on this but I just don`t think it`s there.

Long story short. I have a 2015 4 Runner Trail Edition with the KDSS Suspension.

I purchased some Bilstein 6112 Shocks for the front and some 5160`s for the rear. The 6112 setup requires you to reuse the existing front shock mounts.

I don`t want to reuse the old ones, I`d like to purchase new ones.

When I tried to order some MOOG upper shock mounts today I was told they would not fit the KDSS 4 Runners. They did not know why, but the parts book makes an exception to the KDSS vehicles.

I find this hard to believe there is a difference between the shock mounts for a KDSS vehicle and non-KDSS vehicle. I searched part numbers for OEM shock mounts and did not find a difference, it seems to be the same OEM part number. But I`m worried the site I was checking may just be wrong.

Does anyone know if there is actually a difference between them?

KYB says the same thing but I went ahead and ordered them. I find it hard to believe that they are different. Planning on installing my suspension sometime this month.

I was wondering if:

1) One of the springs on the KDSS vehicles is different and maybe uses a different rubber isolator

2) Maybe one of the shock mounts has a spacer built into it compensate for lean?


Eitherway, might take a chance and just order the MOOG one.

I don’t see what can be different?? I have 6112’s with Eibach 700 lbs springs and reused my stock mounts when I installed them.

Logically there might be something here. The 6112 has a different c-clip setting for right/left side EXCEPT for KDSS trucks, which Bilstein directs to run the same c-clip night right/left. Maybe the shock mount does have some sort of built in spacer? To answer this, did the OEM part number for the top plate match for both KDSS and non-KDSS trucks?

KYB says the same thing but I went ahead and ordered them. I find it hard to believe that they are different. Planning on installing my suspension sometime this month.

What’s the verdict? KYB mounts the same as factory? I ask because I ordered the KYBs as well, and just got them back from PepBoys who assembled them for me (so I didn’t have to use a spring compressor). However they didn’t use the rod adapter - said it wouldn’t fit. I pointed out the Bilstein instructions and that a TON of folks have put these shocks together, but he insisted there wasn’t enough thread with the rod adapter installed... could it be the KYB inner bushing is taller than factory, or the top plate overall is longer? I was gonna install the 6112s this week but now I’m concerned...

Right, that's because the factory non-KDSS springs are not equal so that the driver side one can compensate for lean (not fully).

Of course, aftermarket springs are the same, there is no pax/driver distinction. Hence they compensate via the c-clip or thread on coilovers or you have to put a 0.25 spacer.

With my 6112 settings as per the guide for non-KDSS vehicle, I have zero lean either way.

The KDSS have same length factory springs thus same 6112 settings as there is no lean to compensate for.

The tophat should not be the difference.

While we are on it, if you have any extra weight at all, such as 3/16 skid plates, you will get less lift than advertised when using 600lb springs.

Kyb fits the trail. I have them on my 2013 trail even though the websites say they are not suposed to fit. I have front 6112 struts. The stock nuts look better built than the provided kyb top nots though. Kyb Bushings are exact same dimensions as stock.
