Kern River / Monache Meadows camping trip 8/14/17

Hi All,

Been tied up with work, school, and switching jobs lately but I have some time off next week and am making a trip to Monache Meadows to do a little camping, fishing, and hiking. Figured I’d post here if anyone is free and wants to tag along – the more the merrier. PM me if you’re available.

• Monday 8/14 - drive to Kernville
• Tuesday - Hike / fish / Kern River brewing co
• Wednesday - Head to Monache Meadows
• Thursday - Head home

I would think you'll want to drive up the 395, not up through Kernville. Why add an extra hour to the drive.

On my recent visit we drove up the 395, leaving SD at 4pm (worst time) and eventually got to Chimney Peak campground off Sherman Pass around 10pm.

The next morning it was around 2.5 hrs to the campsites at Monache Meadows. Makes for a great morning drive. Whatever you do, don't drive to the campsites at night. You'll miss the view.

Only 1 of 4 days in Monache? Why not skip the brewery trip and just pack beer. We've got plenty of breweries here in the 619. If you need another reason to skip Kernville and go straight for Monache take in the fact that last weekend it was over 100F in Kernville and 80F in Monache at ~8300 ft.

Thanks Brian. If we were bee-lining up to Monache, I'd definitely come in from the East. Either way we'll roll through bright & early to make camp before dark

I'll keep and eye on the weather and adjust as needed, but we wanted to hit Kernville because a) potentially doing a rafting trip, TBD and b) can't talk my better half into bushwhacking for 3 nights straight

Just put up a trip report on my build thread.

We ended up not making it to Monache. I banged up my knee pretty bad falling out of a raft on the Kern river; so we decided to stay close to town & save Monache for another trip.

Still had a blast in the kernville area / sequoia nat'l forest, tho!
