Solar Eclipse Camping Road Trip [Aug 2017]

Anyone interested in a trip up to OR for the solar eclipse? I will be going solo (with dog) but would welcome some company.

All of this will be for 2 minutes of glory, which is more than what your wife gets. Around 10:30am on Monday August 21, the full solar eclipse will occur.

See tentative itinerary below. I'm picking out campsite and such but am not putting exact locations in this thread. If you can join (even for part of the trip) PM me and I'll send you more specific info.

I'm also very happy to take an suggestions you guys may have, since I've never been in any of these areas before!

Basic plan is to have minimal wheeling (just to get to camp), mostly I imagine this trip to be about camping and hiking and basking in the beauty of the PNW.

• Night: Camp at Umpqua NF (162 miles driving)

Tuesday, August 22

• Day: Hiking around Rogue River (136 miles driving)
• Night: RV camp in Gold Beach, OR

Wednesday, August 23

• Day:
• Night: Camp in Rogue River - Siskiyou NF, CA

Thursday, August 24

• Day: Avenue of the Giants
• Night: Camp in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, CA

Friday, August 25

• Day:
• Night: Camp in Navarro Rivers Redwood State Park, CA

Saturday, August 26

• Day:
• Night: McGregor/Mayweather fight; SF area

may do this instead of mendocino NF. there's just too much over there! this was originally going to be a 5-day trip but after starting research i realized i can spend 3 weeks just in the area between SF and the OR border and still not have seen enough!!

I'm trying to tentatively make a plan for coming down from Seattle. Any lodging and official campgrounds are going to be overflowing so being able to find an off-the-beaten-path spot, I would assume, would be the best option.

I'm not familiar with the area at all so if you've got some insight into where we might be lucky enough to grab a spot near the 100% coverage area, I'd be down for trying to meet up with a group for it.

definitely will be doing dispersed camping to stay away from as many people as possible. I'm looking at Ochoco National Forest at the moment, the northern part of which is well within the zone. The hope is (1) most people will be closer to the coast, and (2) less chance of cloudiness away from the coast.

I've ordered maps and such already. I like doing my research on paper and then checking stuff online after that. But that is my tentative plan for eclipse viewing. Will be planning on setting up camp on Sunday afternoon so we will be good and ready come Monday morning for the eclipse. Undecided whether to stay in Ochoco for an extra day or start heading southbound immediately. But if you join us, then I think that's reason enough to hang out in Ochoco for an extra day.

my original plan was to be home by Weds or Thurs... but that is a whole lot of driving and not much else. if you're down for that, we can go up together and stay in OR for the eclipse and camp together, but then you'll be on your own for the way down. This is the best excuse to take the truck that far up north so I want to take advantage and do a little camping in areas that would otherwise generally be too far away for me.

Awesome. I'll keep an eye on this thread as that's generally the area that I was looking at as well. Once it gets a little closer, hopefully nail down the details.

Friendly FYI .... a major part of HWY-1 below Monteray CA is completely closed (wiped off the earth) and if you are planning to go up the coast you will probably want to take the 5N and then cutover to San Jose then go up the coast after San Francisco. Also parts of HWY-9 have been wiped out as well.

Massive Big Sur slide may keep Highway 1 closed for a year

my plan is to spend all of the time north of SF. anything south of SF i can do on a long weekend, so this trip is more to see the areas a bit farther away. Will probably take the I-5 home from the bay to close out the trip.

Could be good for planning which roads to try to utilize for camping in the area. Ochoco has a shit-ton of roads available. Even with thousands of people, it definitely looks like it could be promising for dispersed camping.

I've decided against putting exactly where I'm staying in this thread, but as I post up the "itinerary", if you are interested in joining any leg PM me and i'll let you know exactly where i'm staying.

But I've got a full tentative schedule set now. Open invite for anyone around!

Happy to move the schedule a bit too. If I find more interesting places or whatnot, the schedule will change anyway.

These are the types of trips I am wanting to take when I have my 3rd gen up to par. I don't think it'll be able to handle such a long trip at this point and time. best of luck and take lots of pics.
