Knocking - looseness in steering

Have them check the tie rods, lower control arm bolts, and things like the swaybar links and bushings.

I seem to be having a similar problem. I believe mine is coming from the steering rag joint ( I think thats what its called, haha. Its the rubber spacer that connects the steering wheel to the rest of the steering shaft). But I think mines going bad because of my body lift. I had to trim the steering shaft spacer a little to fit, and that creates some slop in the rubber joint.
When I drive onroad, there is no play but as soon as I hit a gravel road, its seems loose. I was wondering if the rubber could be replaced with a soft plastic to eliminate some slop. My best guess is that is your problem as well. Its easy to inspect, all you have to do is go under the dash and pull off the steering shaft cover which is held on by 4 little white clips. Hope that helps.

How big a body lift are you running? I believe around 1.5"+ you need to use a spacer to relieve stress and binding on the steering shaft.

Im running the 1.5" from roger brown. I do have the spacer, but it was near impossible to fit in. My guess is I could run with out it, but id rather keep it and deal with some slop. I might try to make a spacer out of plastic to see if it helps and still functions. If I have success, Ill post up how I did it.

And yes that is the rubber joint. I would check it out, feel the rubber to make sure its not dried up and hard, and check for cracks and just overall looseness and wear.
