I absolutely love the truck. I bought a Lexus because it was available (somewhat) locally and was affordable. Toyota land cruisers are not available in canada, because as a nation we "don't like rebranded vehicles" so toyota canada dropped the land cruiser. I bought it over a 4runner, because I realized if I had unlimited funds, I would basically turn my 4runner into an 80 series land cruiser. Plus I use it for camping and sleeping in, and it is much larger inside than a 4runner. It's a much bigger truck too.
The cost of parts are only more expensive if you go through a lexus dealer. With the I h8mud forum, you can find many writeups for you do it yourself stuff and if you find cruiser dan, he can get discounted toyota parts shipped to you. Cruiser Dan and Beno (Onur) (both work for american toyota) both know the 80 series land cruiser/lx 450 inside and out and will sell you everything you need except for the (very) few lexus specific parts. The lx450 is almost identical to the 80 series, except the trim, suspension (which if hasn't been replaced yet, needs to be) and some interior components. I believe everything that is lexus specific, can be replaced with the bolt on toyota equivalent.
The 80 series are not cheap to maintain, but if you maintain them well, they will never let you down. They have several known flaws, the headgaskets in the first run are almost all faulty, if it hasn't been replaced, you can expect it. Toyota redesigned the gasket, and once you replace it, it should last until a rebuild is needed. The front axle needs to be rebuilt every 100,000 miles and there is a pesky heater hose (PHH) that is prone to failure that is in a bad spot. All of these flaws can be fixed with preventive maintenance.
The lx450 were sold in 96,97. The lx470 (100 series land cruiser) was sold from 98 - (sometime in 2000, i forget). I can't comment on the lx470, it does not have the same problems as the 80 series, but trucks are trucks and nothing is perfect. I know the 98,99 lx470s had some crazy air suspension that probably didn't last long. The lx470 also has IFS where as the lx450 has a solid front axle and optional front/rear lockers. So the lx470 would be better on road and the lx450 is a true off road beast.
However it can't be stressed enough how much you'll be spending on gas. 16 mpg going 60 mph on the highway is tough to swallow sometimes. Being able to crawl through stuff that'll stop almost any other stock vehicle out there is worth it though
Anyway the people on ih8mud know way more than me, just make sure you know what to look for and you'll love the truck. I strongly suggest browsing the classifieds on ih8mud, most of those guys will take better care of their truck than 90% of the people out there.
OH, and the 80 series is slow as hell on the highway. You can push it a bit, but it's got a tractor engine. Superchargers can fix that though
