Larger capacity tank from a 1992 into 1990

Backstory: been through like three fuel tanks in 5 years on my 1990. It originally had a 14gal that started leaking. First two replacements were 15gal eBay tanks bc that’s the only place I could find the a 15 gal bc I wanted to squeeze out some additional range. Started leaking after a year. Don’t get shitty eBay tanks. Got it. Third tank was another 15gal from JC Whitney (paid for the warranty on this one just in case, thankfully) Also Started leaking after a year. The 15s fit fine with the only necessary adjustment being a spacer for the skid plate I fabbed from extruded steel square stock (think like signpost material) and longer bolts.


Now, as I go to replace this tank AGAIN I’m wondering, is there any inherent issue in using the higher capacity tanks from a 92-95 that is causing my problem? Furthermore, now that I’ve found the 92-95 was offered with a 17gal tank in some packages, would there be any huge issue with using this tank, other than something simple like modifying the skid plate hardware? Hoping someone who has had multiple trucks from these years knows something.

Since a 17g tank was available stock, fitting it in shouldn't be a problem.

Does the new 17g tank come with fuel pump/pickup and fuel level sender?

If not, you might encounter some fitment issues there.

Fuel tank comes with just the tank so I would probably look into this jumping to a 17. Jumping from 14-15 probably didn’t make much difference. Any ideas on why I keep ending up with a leak after ~1 year every time?

First, where on the tanks do the leaks come from?
Same or different places each time?


Somewhere in my files I have the physical dimensions of the tanks, but can't find it.

Guessing the 17g is taller, which means the elec fuel pump/pickup assy may not reach deep enough into the tank, and, the level sending assy may be different and therefore inaccurate (but that's usually an easy fix).
