This is my first post to this forum. Sorry but this is a bit of a long one.
I have a 1990 4Runner V6 that I am in the process of getting on the road. Two weekends ago I took it out and filled the gas tank. I brought it home and parked it in the driveway. I smelled a gasoline smell coming mostly from the passenger side. I did not see anything obvious, so after it cooled down I brought it into the barn and crawled underneath to have a look around the fuel tank.
I could not see very well around the top of the tank, so I dropped the skid plate for the tank, drained the tank, then unbolted it and dropped it down for a better look. It appeared as though the unit that holds the fuel pump was replaced, but did not see any signs of leaking there or anywhere else on top. No signs of leaking around the filler neck either.
I supported the fuel tank, added about a gallon of gas, and ran it. I shut it down and look around the top of the tank with a mirror. No sign of a leak. I ran out of time with it, but the next weekend I bolted the tank back in, then took it to the gas station and filled it up. Brought it back home; no leak or gas smell. So I figured maybe it just spilled over.
So the following weekend (yesterday) I'm running it in the driveway and the gas smell is back, and its dripping gas from the tank on the ground! It appears to be coming down the passenger side, and dripping along the seam. It stopped when I shut it down. It had been running for a few minutes before it started. I let that all evaporate off, then repeated running it. No gas leak. Rocked the truck, backed it up 50 feet or so, no leak.
Any ideas on what to look at next? Thanks in advance.
