The 2021 Toyota 4runner OEM LED projectors are a complete joke. If you look at my response I mention a "proper" HID or LED projector setup. I don't consider what Toyota did there anywhere close to that.

Sticking these things into your stock halogen projectors isn't going to blind people any more than sticking HID bulbs in there, which a ton of people do. However, at the end of the day you aren't really solving the true problem which is the poorly designed projector and reflector bowl of our stock headlights. So you're casting out a pattern that isn't optimal. But hey, if you like em more power to you!

My wife had a Volkswagen Tiguan with halogen headlights that had a beautiful cutoff and consistent, bright beam pattern from a reflector housing. Some manufacturers just drop the ball completely and I sure as hell wouldn’t call it “engineered specifically for” the bulbs they drop in.

The housings and reflectors are custom made for the specific light source. They have to be. Some are better than others. You can't make a projector that works well for LED and halogen bulbs. That's why LEDs in halogen designs don't work very well. People think they do because you can get bright light in the foreground and scatter a bunch of light over the cutoff so the street signs light up really bright, but you don't get the focus hot spot for good visibility at distance that the correct bulb does. It's not due to poor engineering or poor quality LEDs. It's a physical impossibility with current LED emitters. You can get a compromise.

You can prove this yourself. Android and iPhone both have light meter apps. You can measure light output at the hot spot and the light above the cutoff. I think you'll find LEDs are lower at the distance hotspot and higher above the cutoff. Or just look at reflective street signs with the OEM vs LEDs or HIDs.

Toyota has among the best headlights in the industry in the parts bin. They just don't use them in the 4Runner for whatever reason. The bi xenon in the Lexus models are fantastic. Self adjusting. Self leveling. Turn around corners. Etc. 4Runner gets the cheapest possible option. Even the ROTW versions of the Prado and fortuner get electronic adjustable headlights - it's a legal requirement for anything with a tow hitch in some markets. Not for us though.

The one thing that drives me nuts about the 2021 ORP LED headlights is the black spot in the upper part of the beam that casts a shadow on the road. Its taking a lot for me to get use to it.

The L shape “clip” that hangs down INTO the cutoff, not the actual cutoff, I think we see the same thing:

Totally agree. The German Tiguan and other German cars have amazing headlights. Even Audi had the adaptive Matrix LED headlights (since 2017) then Audi USA disabled them because they were not DOT/NHTSA approved. The DOT/NHTSA is the real problem. They need to get with the times and certify the technology while forcing manufacturers to adhere to newer, higher standards. Again, I have never seen so clearly at night. It was astounding.

Definitely can vouch for the germans there. My wifes VW Atlas was one of the only (if not the only) large 3-rows that came with LEDs on every trim. They are fantastic. Everything else is crappy halogen projectors (or even worse on wranglers) unless you pay for LEDs. How NHTSA allows these cars to come with candles for headlights is beyond me.

Does the reason they were not DOT approved have anything to do with the absence of a dedicated high beam stalk? Do the adaptive matrix models still have that?

I would be surprised they would allow the extent of what’s already passed for adaptive beams (auto hi/low) which has made its way into everything from Toyotas to Land Rovers in the US.

From Audi: “Long story very short: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) state that headlights have to have a dedicated low beam and a high beam. Adaptive driving beams (ADB), Matrix beam and DML headlights, can shine their high beams while redirecting beams to not blind oncoming traffic, using the windshield-mounted camera.”

In Europe, Audi’s digital lights can stay in high beam mode, but punch out holes for oncoming traffic or pedestrians.

The Vents of headlight dust cover can't aim down?

Have anyone experienced the same problem when you’re installing the extended dust cover?
The dust covers only install 1 way and the vents are not aiming down. They're sideways. Pass side vent is almost straight back. Driver's side vent is almost straight forward. Can the vent covers be unscrewed and rotated on the main dust cover or are they fine the way they are? The covers can not be swapped side to side on the vehicle or they'd be aiming up.

Mine don't aim straight down at 6 o'clock. I'd say 5 o'clock on one side and 7 o'clock on the other. I figured that was aimed down as I can't imagine there was any other way.
