Jeep Wrangler JK went from 2007 to 2018, that's 12 model years. Yes, you can also get a JL as a 2018 which seems weird to me. So the 4Runner if it went as long as the Jeep without a refesh would not get it until 2022. I think the Nissan Frontier has gone even longer.
The reason why we love them is for the durability, longevity, and less computerized stuff to break down when off-roading. The diving and leaning can be fixed with a lift.

Most, if not all new "ish" offerings are just mini-vans. Or a least minivan inspired. That's not a bad thing for many. But if you want rugged, more truck based vehicle. the 4 Runner and GX are about the only mid sized vehicles offered. G-Wagon and Range Rover are probably in there too, but the price to play is prohibitive.
I think that's partly why light duty trucks, like the F-150 etc are so popular.
