LCDs too dim

Preface: I've inverted the three LCDs in the dash (odometer, stereo, HVAC). I.E. I reapplied LCD film so that it's light letters on dark background.

The odo is fine, but the Scion T1808 stereo is pretty bad, and the HVAC is nearly as bad, in terms of daylight visibility, because the LCDs there just don't contrast enough. It probably also has something to do with the backlighting.

So, is there a way to boost the contrast on those LCDs (unlikely), or more likely, any suggestions for better backlighting that won't wash it out? Maybe EL strips? I dunno

Thoughts, or better, experiences?

I'm thinking your radio is very dim. The radio in my brother's RAV4 is also extremely dim. Alex and I tried the 12V mod (read and search in the thread I posted) but really didn't do much to brighten the display.

Yeah it's the radio. The HVAC is borderline but really the radio is just the worst. It's not really high contrast as is. (It's a Scion T1808 but it looks to be about as bad as the nonfancy no-nav no-JBL radio I replaced which I also polar inverted prior.)
