Mod: Reverse Polarity display OD & HVAC display

Not many threads about this seemingly simple mod. I think it's pretty cool and gives a more "upscale" look. Our runners have 2 digital displays (not including the HU, can be done, but most of us don't have the OEM radio anymore) that can be modded. These displays are "positive polarity" meaning that dark characters are display on top of a light background. This mod reverses that and makes the display a "negative polarity" display. Apparently, there are some issues:

1) ODO display: Polarizing strip has to be removed by exacto knife and dried adhesive buffed off. New polarizing strip has to be test fitted (rotated until effect is desired), adhere new one on top of LCD display. New LEDs (newer meaning a tad brighter) could improve effect. Overall: not bad

2) HVAC display: Reverse polarization results aren't not as good. The 5V bulbs aren't enough to illuminate it. I remember riceandpho mentioning doing a 12V mod to power his LEDs. Never saw a picture to see if this could help. Hokey's isn't the only one to have this "dim" result.

Where to buy? Anyway, if anyone is interested in doing it, you can go to: Polarization.com (Polarization.com - Shop) in Texas. The quality apparently is very good. Order the thinnest self-adhesive film, part name is: “Linear Polarizer w/adhesive PFA”.

12v mod, you first have to unwind the led leads off the base of the neo4, then put put the pos to a acc switched source on the harness, the ground to ground. also after this mod, you just need to tape the base of the neo4 to the back of the holder on the hvac unit since itll sit loose.

Ok, so I get NEO4, wire them up to a switched (and ground) wire. MIGHT have to wire them separately. Sounds easy enough. Thanks

Looks great Cookie, nice job

Hahah, nah, I haven't done anything yet. Here is what they look like now.

ODO display as I said before, it bright enough.

HVAC display is dim. With riceandpho's suggestion, LED brightness may have to be tweaked. I had arrows (buttons) re-LEDed with brighter ones and there is some light leak.

Thanks for the credit CookieRoe . I need to do the 12v mod but I really don't use the climate display enough that it's bothered me yet. The pictures actually show it being darker than it is. But during the middle of the day it's definitely tough to see.

The methods and places to buy are what I did as well so I don't have much to offer. Good luck!

Found an up to date pic

The light settings for this photo were better. This is without the 12V mod which would definitely help on very sunny days.

Video Tutorial for 12V Mod?

Hello, I hate to revive an old thread but I really need help converting the HVAC system to a 12v system. This thread verbally describes how but I am not electrical-savvy and would ask if anyone could post a video or photo montages of the 12v system mod.

Most of my bulbs are burned out and I really want to put some LEDs in there. Any help is appreciated!

Oh and welcome aboard.

I would like to revisit this mod. I haven't "repaired" mine since a couple of years ago, but will be doing do relatively soon.

I'm migrating of my pics to imgur (pain in the ass). screw photobucket.
