Hello everyone. Let me introduce myself; my name is Brian from San Jose and about a year ago I bought a 1997 4Runner from a good friend of mine for a ridiculously good deal. The only caveat? It makes a tapping sound... We suspect it's piston slap due to the fact the previous owner (before my friend) overheated the motor so bad it cracked the heads.
Irregardless, I just drive it like a jerk and the motor never skips a beat. Pulls hard, gets 19 mpg but sounds HORRIBLE. I've put about 10k on it and daily it to my job at Yahoo. It's a bit out of place in Silicon Valley, the land of Audi.
Due to it's willingness to never die and the metronome 5vz; we all started to call her Taps.
Specs: 1997 SR5 auto, 4x4, elocker, factory running board delete and chrome delete. It's had a hard life, lots of neglect, wheeling and general shenanigans. I love the truck and it's never let me down.
Anyway, I plan on slowly restoring it. Cleaning it up as much as I can, replacing the 5vz and replace the A340 that makes odd noises with a R151.
Here are some pictures from a recent trip to Hollister:
