2016 Limited with a Sonic Lite 169vrb. Pic is without the the WDH which makes it perfectly level. We’re looking to move cross country and putting on 2500+ and looking for some recommended mods.

Thinking about a trans cooler, new tires, new shocks, etc

Ideas?

My feedback…

You need WDH and trans cooler. Even staying out of OD, your transmission is going to get hot and will reduce the life of your trans fluid so unless you’re changing it twice as often, you’re gambling with a failure.

I have a Fastway e2 WHD and a Derale transmission cooler. Oh… and the Sonic Lite SL169VRK.

I also just replaced my leaking XREAS system with a Dobinsons IMS suspension. Small lift in front but otherwise stock height.

I don't have a picture with my new T4R but here is our trailer:

I'm a contender!

Happy to finally be able to post here. After about a year of searching the nation for this specific trailer, I found one 15 miles away. It comes in about 2660 lbs dry and is basically a sexy parachute while towing it. My first trip out, winds were gusting pretty good and it was noticeable. I saw 7 mpg going up La Veta Pass, 5000 rpm more than once, and that was simply to maintain the speed limit...it was a brutal intro to towing with my 4Runner. That said, I've adjusted expectations and try to stick to secondary roads, keep speeds around 60-65 mph, and cargo weight down. It's a perfect trailer, I'm able to stand up at 6' 3 and it comes with a wet bath for the wife. Looking forward to boondocking this year!

Very Nice! I've learned to keep it in S4, stick to 60-65 mph (which helps with mpg), and basically enjoy the ride... I'm in no rush, I'm camping.

Just remember to stick to the right lane unless passing, and when on a two-lane, pull over every once in a while to let the folks pass... Came to appreciate this courtesy from the other side of the coin when riding a motorcycle.

What kind of blasphemy is this? Everyone knows the left lane is an American birthright. I also require people trying to merge to compete for that right while pretending I'm the only one on the road.

Just kidding...great advice for being a considerate motorist. I do my best.

I had the teardrop I built for a lot of years. But the 2nd kid ended up being a deal-breaker. Just physically not enough space for everyone to sleep. I tried a few configs. Ended up selling it and bought a full sizer. I've towed mostly around Utah/Idaho/Montana. 4R chassis towing is okay. The engine is not really good for the load. With a small aux trans cooler I never see more than about 225 temps up big long grades, sometimes all the way down into 2nd gear going 60mph and engine pretty far into the rpm range. MPG is horrible - I think I averaged right at 10mpg from Utah to Montana last time. There's half a dozen small passes in there. Lots of really long moderate grades. I bought and sold an F250 I planned to use, but it wasn't reliable enough to keep, so it went away. Probably going to buy a Tundra this spring for better towing if car prices don't come back to earth. If they do I'll pick up a LC200 or LX570 to replace my 4Runner. Love the 4R, but need better towing capability now and doing less offroading with the kids.

Anyway - she's on the bigger side of what I'd want to tow very far with the 4R. I've pulled this camper about 2,000 miles so far. The teardrop was a lot nicer for everything except enough room. Maybe I'll build another one in a few years with enough room for 4 and get rid of this wobble box. I really don't like the bigger trailer - it's a PITA to tow and highly limiting in where you can take it.
