Lift Installed = My horrible ride

A few weeks back I put on my lift I had been piecing together. I put Tundra TRD with stock billies w/ a Toytec top plate spacer in front and OME 891 with Nitrocharger 60028 Comfort Rides in rear. I plan on adding a cargo box in back for some additional weight but haven't got around to it. I have a little rake, about 1/4 inch but hardly noticeable.

Needless to say, my ride now is terrible. It seriously feels like I am driving a dump truck! I was hoping the 891 would settle a bit but they haven't. I don't think the front is a bad as the rear but it's not great. I think I can put up with it until I get some adjustable billies for the front. What do I do about the rear? Do I go to the OME 890? Forget all those and go with LC coils? I don't really like the idea of putting used coils on. Open to suggestions.

I feel your pain.

in the rear, my first setup was 891's with the 60027 shocks. Hated it, so stiff.

Next I swapped the 891s with LC 8 wraps, while keeping the 60027 shocks. It was better, but still quite stiff. I attributed the remaining stiffness to the HD 60027 shocks.

Next, I switched the 60027 shocks for the Bilstien 5125 from toytec. This setup rode pretty nice. But by then I had hoped the 8 wraps would have settled more that they had, so I liked everything but the lift height.

Next I swapped the 8 wraps for 890's. Now it rides perfect, the 890s have a slightly higher spring rate than the 8 wraps (which were a bit too soft IMO) and the ride height is perfect.

Hope that helps. I dont have experience with the 60028 shocks, but I can tell you for sure that the 891's ride quite harsh on an unloaded truck.

Thanks Ripcord! I had read through your threads and seen all the different setups you have had. You've covered almost every combination. If mine rides this harsh with the 891's and 60028 I can only imagine how rough it was with the 60027.

I guess my next step would be switching out those 891's for 890's / maybe a few trim packers and trying them with the 60028. If that doesn't cut it then I switching out the comfort rides with some Bilsteins.

I think that is the best course of action. Hope it works out well for you.

My next step is toytec/bilstien adjustable coilovers for the front.. Never really liked the 883/90004 combo either..

Im running 890's with OME shocks and its good.

If you want to stick to ~3" of rear lift, and get a soft ride the best would be using OME 960's and a 1.5" spacer.

I'm really confused why people run OME springs and then are surprised that the ride is stiffer? I'm not trying to be rude or anything but if you look at the info provided by the manufacturer (not the shop trying to take your money for your "lift kit") they always rate these springs by the added weight that they can carry. A lot of the lift you get from an OME spring is a result of a spring meant for more weight on a truck that isn't weighted down yet.

From the ARB website:
Rear Medium Load Spring 2.0" 1 2906
Nitrocharger Sport Shock 2 60028
Nitrocharger Shock 2 *N86/N86C
Heav y Load (330lbs to GVW) Spring 2.5" 1 2890
Nitrocharger Sport Shock 2 60027
Nitrocharger Shock 2 N86
Heav y Constant Load (660lbs to
GVW)
Spring 3.0" 1 2891
Nitrocharger Sport Shock 2 60027
Nitrocharger Shock 2 N86

So with 891's throw another 600 lbs of gear in the back and see how she rides. Again wasn't trying to be a jackass or anything or single you out here, but I have read these comments a lot and don't think people do full research before doing mods like these.

I'm running the Toytec coilovers up front and the OME 890's with the OME 60027's. I like the rear springs, but I think I'm going to swap the rear shocks out for a set of 5125 bilsteins.

And I agree a bit with Stick Figure. The 891's are specifically designed to be on the stiffer side and to be used with either additional rear weight or towing. If you don't have the additional weight in the rear to offset the stiffness, it's going to want to bounce all over the place.

It's no trouble, you're not being a jackass or anything but I was planning on building a cargo box and running that with it and some other items in back, just don't have the funds to build it right now. I also went based on the advice from the dealers that there wasn't much difference in the 891 and 890. Looks like I got some bad advice. I was buying coils regardless from them so I decided to ask their opinion before I pulled the trigger so either way they were getting my money.

I did months of research before I put together my lift. The problem is you don't know if you are doing to be good with something until you try it. Some people run the 891s and think they are just fine, some people think they are rough, some people hate OME all together, some think they ride like a Cadillac. I tried the OME 891 and looks like I failed for my taste.

The purpose of this thread wasn't "OMG I installed a lift and it rides terrible. I didn't see that coming." If you look at the original post I was inquiring about options now that I made a poor choice. Ripcord did a fine job of answering my question in his first post. I don't think any of the responses hinted at that people were surprised at the results, they are just stating the solutions.

Again, you're not be a jackass or being rude and I'm not trying to be either. I always appreciate anybody who is willing to take time to read and respond to my posts.

Right on. The 891's were pretty rough for me in the beginning but I knew I was going to be adding an aftermarket bumper and storage until so I toughed it out. Since I added my aftermarket bumper the ride has gotten appreciably better. Stick with them atleast until you build yourself a storage box and load it up. I say that's better than switching now and having it sag later when you have it loaded down.

Thats the exact same reason I got the setup I originally bought. I had plans for armor, rear storage, and a SUB in the rear. But plans changed so the lift needed to change too.

Man that sounds awful, I just put a lift on the front and 285's and it rides pretty rough but thats pretty much nit picking. Especially when my tires are load range E... Anyways, I can give you another review on 890's just as soon as I get the time to put them on.

P.S I can't say much on coilovers, but My setup glided like a Benz when i still had stock tires. The TRD and Tundra intended 5100s are what I have and rode far smoother than I thought was ever possible. With Load range E BFG's I put on recently it doesn't Glide as well as it did, but it still handles corners like a dream and added a lot of agility to the ride.

Tires do make a good bit of difference too. I got 265-75-16 P tires. One size bigger than stock but I insisted one the P (passengers) rated tires so my ride wouldn't be too rough. I think it helps for sure. I see in you signature that your tires are the same size but not sure the load rating.

Load E :sobbing:

Load E is heavy duty for trucks this size, it will definitely be a firmer ride than if you had C or P rated tires.

Add sandbags until the ride improves. It is about that time of year anyway.

Considered it. You hardly need them here. I recall living in Iowa with my Taco and they were a must. I'm probably going be selling some next to new OME 891 and getting OME 890.

Get a set of front and rear Tundra 5100's and install the OME890. That should really help. I have the Land cruiser stock shocks in the back, but those are said to be stiffer than the 5100's. I was not happy with my LC coils. I thought they were to soft and the TRD Coils didn't match well with them.

I should say that not all of my comments were about just your situation, I've read a lot of "my OME rides like _____" comments recently, so I kind of lumped all of my comments into one.

I generally try to keep my opinion on ride quality to myself because my taste in stiff sports car suspension doesn't always meet eye to eye with what other people want. I've got the 890s with the regular Bilstein right now, I've got about 100lbs of regular gear that I carry daily, and while it is a bit stiffer than stock the ride maintains the same quality even with 4 people, and more gear.

Thanks for all the input. Considering my budget I am going to try the 891 to 890 switch. If that doesn't help then I will go the shocks.
