lift + tires + wheels = terrible mpgs

If you are trying to calculate mileage based on what the odometer is giving you, it will be off with larger tires. I'm running 265/70/17's and mine is off 3.7%. What size tire are you running?

oh jeez.. DUH. totally missed that. running a 265/65/17 terra grappler g2. the new wheels are a lot heavier as well, although i doubt that has much of an effect.

what is actually more bothersome is how much slower the truck feels. it was really punchy on the stock setup, now it feels like it's straining to get out of iits own way. regear would no doubt help but that's a bridge too far for my needs.

If you want to improve it

reduce the front end lift to 2" and rear to 1". This will also improve the ride. Also messing with tire pressure can make a bit of difference as well. :beer:

I have an 05 v6 averaged around 18 before my lift and tires. I run 285s with 3 inches of lift and get around 14-15 now. I also live in Wyoming and drive a lot of windy interstate which makes it worse. But yeah if you want a lifted truck and bigger tires the MPGs will definitely go down.

Yeah my mpg dumped from 16 around town (winter) to about 12 when I put on a flowmaster muffler. I just lifted it last week but haven't calculated mpg yet. May take off the flowmaster come winter this year. Have any of you thought of regearing to gain back mpg? I heard a few 3rd gen guys who regeared on 35's and were getting around 20 mpg highway.

Far from an expert, but I don't see how a muffler could drop mpg's by 25%. I assume the hp gain would only be 5% at best and probably not worth it.

yeap. i didnt weigh the tires, guessing they're atleast 10 lbs heavier each. wheels were another 5 or 6 lbs each.. crazy unspring weight.

to think of all the $ i've spent on my evo reducing unspring weight... this truck stuff is so counterintuitive. =)

Yeah, it's really strange coming from cars where one of the main goals is weight reduction.

i've had an evo 9 for a few years. such a ridiculous and amazing litttle car.

Don't underestimate the unsprung weight you added with heavier wheels and tires. This will make you truck feel slow as it takes more effort to accelerate and slow this mass

To add to the pile of info. I'm getting hight 17s for mpg lately with 2.5" OME lift, and 255/75/17 bfg mud terrains. I would be highly disappointed with 14 mpg. I do have a 5sp though so surely that helps a bit but not 3mpg. I usually keep the rpms under 2500 unless passing though. Usually closer to 2000.

Wheels and tires that weigh more than what you had will make a big difference in what you get for mileage. My truck had E load 265/65/18 BFG A/T's with factory wheels and you could really feel the extra weight of the tires when accelerating and stopping. The set up I have now is quite a bit lighter even though the tires are the same height. Driving around town and on the highway feels a lot more peppy.

Thanks! I loved it but unfortunately it was a bit much to maintain at this point in my life. Traded it for the bike and a good chunk of cash, so I made out pretty well. Sure am gonna miss it though. The price is finally going up for VR4's, but for my TT swapped base model there wasn't much future lol. The new owner loves it and is taking care of it, so I'm happy with that. I still keep in touch with him.

HA I am getting 15 in my 07 V6 with no lift or tires. Just spidertrax. I noticed it go from 17.5 to 13 after chopping off the resonator and putting a flow master 40 series.
Spark plugs are new, air filter is clean, maf/throttle body have been cleaned. Any ideas why I seem 3-4 lower than everyone else?

Nah man it seems to be happening, my v6 went from 18ish to 13ish after the flow master install (also cut off resonator so I don't know if it's that or both)

On our recent 2000 mile trip doing the New Mexico BDR loaded down we saw a high of 15.1 to a low of 12.3 corrected mpg. The 12.3 was on the interstate heading home running 85. It did much better stock but it was only stock 3 weeks.
2003 v8 5spd auto, 3/2 lift, Arb bumper with winch, 285 Wrangler MTR with kevlar, and a Magnaflow.

To me is is great for what it is. My daily is a diesel Mercedes E class that gets upper 30's

why is picking tire size so damn tough!


265/65/17 stock, weight 39 lbs, 30.5x10.4


265/70/17C KO2, weight 45.7 lbs, 31.6x10.7 (tread 15/32)

275/70/17C AT3, weight 51lbs, 32.2x11.1 (tread 16.5/32)

285/70/17 Standard Load AT3 weight 45lbs, 32.7x11.5 (tread 14/32)


I've narrowed my search down to these three tires sizes and brands... I want a toytec boss lift or icon stage 1 somewhere in the 2.5/2 lift really slight rake (no new UCAs for a while, 95% pavement, but i want it capable).. The 285s are lighter than the 275s, the 275s are really the perfect size I'd think,but not many options.. I'd rather the KO2s but fear they will be too small for the lift... and the bigger KO2s are heavy and E rated... i don't know what to do...
