I just bought a 01 sport for my son for his 16Th birthday and he wants to give it a better stance since it needs new tires and shocks now is the time to do it. what do you guys recommend nothing to high maybe 1.5 to 2 in the rear and what ever in the front to make it level. I want to keep the price as low as possible since he docent have much to spend.

I will start off. First off welcome. Next, You just invested in one of the best running truck made and I think many will agree with you. It will be reliable and last through college and then some. I know at least one young man in College that was washing his 4Runner at 2 years old.
I do not know what you have bought at this point but I would say knock out the Maint. first and foremost. Then I would go after the stuff you want to Mod or change!
There are SO MANY options out there and most of us have spent way to much time reading and researching systems and it is all over the place here and I do mean pretty much anything!
You will be in good hands and company. Look forward to pictures and the build process.

My son is 15 and I've been looking for a car for him for next year. I've been looking at Tacoma's, but even the 2000 year models must be lined in gold. I think I'll be getting him a 4WD 4runner instead since I can get one for about $4000-$5000 in south FL and after being a 4Runner owner for the past 4 months. I love how easy they are to work on, parts are reasonable and they last forever.

Lucky kid. My first car was a $500 Datsun 500 wagon in bright orange! Depending on your current shocks and springs maybe a spacer lift. Otherwise read the faq info there's plenty options. I'm doing tundra trd/906/bilstein setup but then again my suspension is shot so a refresh is needed.

Look for [MENTION=79826]absalom[/MENTION]'s signature and click on his lift information link. I found it very helpful in deciding what I want to do to my 4Runners and it gives a comprehensive list for what's needed. I went with '99 tall springs and oem shocks for my 01 sport to give it a better looking stance. On my 99 I put on my Trd tundra fronts and LC 8 wraps in the rear and made it my offroad machine.

Lucky kid, indeed. 4runner really is the best choice, reliable as heck, and super versatile to adapt as his life and his needs change.
I bought a Tacoma in my early twenties and it should have been a 4runner. 12 years later I was selling it to replace with a vehicle that could accommodate car seats. Loved that taco so much that I bought an equivalent year 4runner. Cried like a baby when I sold the taco, though. Felt like putting down old yeller.

Lots a good info there and on the lift info/faq. 99 talls are a great option. People use both Tacoma and tundra 5100s in their lifts. The tacoma 5100s have 3 perches while the tundra 5100s have 5. Most people here (including myself) run the tundra 5100s. If you're using 99 tall springs, stick with oem. The next taller, most popular spring people use are the TRD tundra springs. Paired with the 5100s will give ~2 inches of front lift. As far as the back goes, 99 tall springs would probably be best with oem shocks. Another option for shocks are the 5100s that are designed for 0-2 inches of lift. If you want around 2 inches of lift, Old Man Emu makes springs that can help you attain that. Really nice looking runner. Take the advise of [MENTION=92510]Ol'Blue[/MENTION] and prioritize. Preventive mtx first such LBJ,s Radiator, cooler, fluids etc......
- Engine
- Transmission
- Suspension
- Then the goodies
Brakes, AF sensor, rad, Muffler on order going to Toyota on Monday to get timing belt and water pump and spark plugs. I just found a set of tundra y/y & y/b springs with tundra OE Billstein struts going to see how they sit before I do any thing to the rear

Do all of that your self minus the Timing belt. A Rad job is EASY on this thing. So are plugs wires hell even doing a lower intake job is not that hard on this truck. If you have basic skills you can do it. It seems you are off to a good start to say the least. Next I would highly recommend getting an external tranny cooler. I work at a automotive shop that specializes in heating and cooling systems. Let me tell you I see more than a few Milkshake issues a week. Mostly on GM's and the Powerstroke trucks but anything with a tranny/oil cooler in the Radiator is just STUPID! It is a EASY and cheap fix that could save about a grand to three on the high side.
After all that is done, BUILD TIME!!!!! I have over 25-30k in both my 4Runners (99 and an 01). Trust me this is the way to go because doing it this way will yield you a lot more fun later.

No thread hijack intended, just asking here since i've been looking in on occasion. Wondering what your opinions were on the magnefine in-line filter with the external cooler since your exposure to this is more then mine.
