Lighted running boards

So I'm online trying to find a place to order new mats for my beast.... and I see an ad for "lighted running boards" for the 2003 4runner. I went and looked at the item and it looks awesome.. but I was wondering what the specifics for these were.

Do they light up when the door opens? when the lights are on? what activates the lights (and what would be their purpose other than flat out just looking good?)

Is it possible to have the lit running boards on a 97?

They light up when you enter/exit the truck. AFAIC, they're useless. They came with my 03 Limited, but if they'd been an option, I wouldn't have paid a nickle for it.

A more useful option would have been making the rear fog lamp housings functional. It took about an hour to convert them to tail/brake lights. I never did like vehicles with only one rear lamp on each side.

How about chrome running boards? Anyone have pics I could see... my 97 black running boards are looking kind of .... rugged.

It's like no matter how much you clean them they still look old and dirty, is there a wax or cleaner that helps keep the black plastic lookin spectacular? Because the rest of the car at this point looks amazing because I care for it like it's my child... I Just can't seem to get the black running boards lookin good. Same with the trim around the windows, I suppose.
