Im gonna be regearing my 4runner next month with 4.88s. I want to put a limited slip in while Im at it. I cant afford $400+ for one. Is there any that anyone knows of that is cheaper and will hold up to off road. most of my driving is on pavement since its my daily driver but its also my wheeler. Any help is appreciated. I have looked all over for one but there has to be one I missed

Maybe not the answer you wanted, but consider waiting until you can afford it and install a locker instead, don't waste your money on a LSD.
The Aussie is a good but inexpensive one.
Or you could get a spool for around $200, IIRC.

Spool is not something I will do. I am on pavement most of the time. I have thought about a locker but for what I do a lsd is my best option.

I'm in the same boat as you and have been looking around at LSD as well. I have decided to save my cash and go with the new Auburn gear LSD front and rear for my wife's daily driver that we use for camping trips and logging road/mining road excursions. Problem is they are about as expensive as a LSD gets, around $500 each. Let me know if you run across anything interesting.

Factory 4.88s with LSD, check out some boards with guys from BC or Alberta on them. You may find a a guy swapping out his 4.88s from a Hilux Surf for something else. Could probably get front an rear 3rds for 5-600 bucks, probably save you that same amount.

Older Nissans (90's) had electronic locking diffs on some 4X4 trucks and what ever that moon rover looking SUV they had is called. If you could find one of theses at a salvage yard im sure it would be cheaper then front and rear LSD. I would take a selectable rear locker any day over LSD,

It would take adapting the whole rear axle.

Yes, a selectable locker is great for wheeling where you are lifting tires off the ground, rock crawling etc... They do have some downfalls though. Slippery roads and lockers on a daily driver can get you in trouble really quickly in my neck of the woods where a limited slip will actually improve traction on corners. Wet or dry, loose or solild a LSD is what you want when all 4 corners are on the turf on a DD vehicle.

As far as a selectable locker goes I would just have to drop the coin on a ARB or opt for the toyota E-locker with the cable actuator for simplicity.

I agree but the man asked for a solution on the cheap. The whole Nissan diff was the cheapest option I found.

Those nissan lockers are electronic selectable with a switch in the cab. They will almost bolt in and his rims will fit. He is gonna re gear anyway so he matches the front to the rear.

I dont have any experience with them, they may be junk, but thats pretty cheap for a electronic locker!

Selectable locker is the way to go if I could afford that. Nissan gears are harder to find and cost a lot more than toyota. If I do any axle mods or swap it will be to dana 60s(just because I have a set).

My 1st gen is a DD no off road use at all. I am going to use the V6 rear axle and I'm going to use the LSD units from the Toyota Supra. The early 80's Supra for the front and late 80's for the rear. I can tweak the LSD for a stronger lock. Yoy can buy these units for $200 to $500 each

Tailgate turned out good. thank you. other than I had to hot wire the motor. and my wiper motor went out from sitting so long. Good to know about the supra axles. I think I know where an 83 is I can get parts from
