Limited Wheel Swap - 17" TRD & 285/70/17 Tires Fit?

i have a limited with aftermarket wheels that have more offset than the pro wheels and 285s. I also have a 2.5" lift and still had to do some trimming. Your caster will determine where exactly, but i would anticipate needing to trim the front, removing mudflaps if you have them, and potentially heating and pushing that mudflap area back in.

if you have 17" TRD pro rims, the 265/70/17 is the stock tire size that comes with the sr5, trd pro, trail edition, etc. So yeah, it'll fit. The tire size is the same circumference and diameter, etc. all that good stuff.
If you threw a 285 on a 17 trd pro rim on a stock 4runner, you won't make it out of the parking lot without cringing in pain due to rubbing issues even at half wheel lock.

thanks, i don't have wheels yet, but i'm looking toward something made by Toyota - so TRD or Trail wheels maybe.
Not necessarily true. 285/70R17 tires fit just fine on my stock 2016 Trail (mounted on trail wheels) with no rubbing at all, but I thought they looked stupid. They're too wide, and don't look proportional to the vehicle. I've said it before, but 285 or 295 width tires on a 4Runner look like a little kid playing dress up and wearing their parents shoes.
I currently have 275/70R17 BFG K02's (mounted on Trail wheels) on my 2019 Limited, and I don't have any rubbing. I wish someone made a 265/75R17 tire, because I would run those in a heartbeat. I like the Trail wheels, but I'll eventually go to 18 inch wheels for winter and summer so I can run a 265/70R18 year round. A taller, stock width tire is both the most practical and most aesthetically pleasing option for these trucks. But I know opinions are like sphincters and I'm in the minority with mine around here.

I can try to take some better ones, but I do have a couple that should give you some idea of how it looks. Sorry for the crappy lighting. The truck has ~200 miles on it, so this is the factory alignment. I haven't gotten out calipers to measure the space between the sidewalls and my UCA, but I can slide my hand in between the two, so I would estimate there's just shy of an inch of clearance between them.

I'm not saying you're lying, but I have an incredibly hard time believing this. You must have a unicorn of a 4runner then. I'd put money on 99% of stock 4runners (if xreas, at stock height) rubbing while rocking 285/70/17 on the OEM rim.
No rubbing in any way, shape, or form? Even at full articulation and in reverse? Even at full compression?
Guys running 3" lifts running 285/70/17s still rub so that's why I have trouble wrapping my head around this. If you don't rub, you're the only person I've come across on the internet running 285s on a stock 5th gen that didn't rub. In which case, without a lift, if would look absolutey goofy, I agree lol
Lift height does not effect tire clearance, for about 700,000th time.
On my Limited, I believe 285's would likely rub, but on my 2016 Trail, with stock Trail wheels, they did not.
I had 285 KO2's on it while I lived in Colorado and drove the Alpine Loop, Lead King Loop, Mosquito Pass, Imogene and Black Bear Passes, some mild Moab area wheeling, and general FS road use with that setup. I never encountered rubbing issues with the the amount of flexing required to do that sort of off-roading, which is honestly the most rugged terrain I'm willing to drive a new $40K+ vehicle on.
Also never had it realigned in the time I owned it, FWIW.

I personally wouldn't go OEM from a fitment standpoint. They might be better quality but I don't offroad at all so I don't need super hardcore forged rims (are OEM TRD Pro rims forged? I'm assuming they're a better quality than any replica product, anyhow).
FN Wheels sells a TRD replica rim which is great because it's 0.5" wider and has a more aggressive offset, but FN in a weird state right now so you'd be waiting a while for their rims.
A lot of people on the 4runner and tacoma forums are rocking these which are essentially half price:

In that same breath, I would suggest you do your due diligence to ensure whether or not these are the rims for you in regards to quality balanced with your needs and usage.
FWIW, I'm rocking them during the winter with 1.25" spidertrax spacers and (knock on wood) haven't had an issue yet. The powder coating has had normal wear and tear over the one winter I've put them through -normal rock chips with no peeling or flaking even after 2 tire rotations. I was kind of hoping they would flake so I could get them powder coated to like a volk te37 bronze.

Edit: I only ask this because I barely rub running 285s with a 2.5 lift in the front at full articulation. If I add any compression to that at full articulation, it sounds like a full on gang bang in my wheel well. So, might be a miscommunication in terminology.

On my limited I use 265/70/17 K02s. Yes they rub. I had to trim, heat and adjust front mud liners. Only driver side rubbed, the other side none. It rubbed at factory height.
Unless you have a weird type of offset rim I am skeptical you could make 285s fit unless lifted. The only other thing to note is some tire manufactures measure section width differently as such you may find one brand in 285..runs thinner on equal rims.

thanks for your reply. I'm on my 3rd 4runner. my last 2 were SR5s. I like the Limited, just not the tires (or the excessive chrome, but that's another discussion). I've had 2 flats already and these tires are not great when doing serious off roading. my last SR5 had stock rims and I put good off road tires and I was happy. I'm not real picky about the look of the wheel, just want better tires. I'll definitely keep doing some research. this is an investment for wheels/tires. not cheap.
