Locking Rear differental

I bought my 97 4 runner a few months back. i went to use it the other day and it would not engage. Is there anything I can do short of taking it to the dealer and having him take it apart?

UMMMM need more info? does the light go on, does it blink (RR) ? did you put it in 4x4 4L, you can use it only in that mode, did the previous owner do the grey wire mod or 2lo mod, maybe he f'kd the wiring up? when locked did you try turning left-right, you test it on dirt, sand, pavement, on pavement you can feel it locked, on dirt or sand not so much... more info or inclusion of diagnosis of "not engage" :

It does not engage at all. The light just keeps flashing. iIdont think it was moded on some rich lady traded it in before I bought it.
I was told by the dealler that when it is engaged the ABS light is spose to come on telling me its ready to go? Was he tellin the truth?

O.K getting there, just to make sure, your truck has the locking rear-end button on the left by your knee?



now it can only be used in 4x4 but in 4L only, if it still blinks/flashes try to go in reverse a bit then forward or turn left/right while going forward, it should just stay lit



The ABS stays lit (left) and is disabled, the RR Diff Lock light is on- not flashing (right) on constant (RR DIFF LOCK): , if it still doesn't work- then off to the dealer you go... man I hope this helps....:
