Looking at buying a 97 sr5 4runner

Hey guys,

So I found a 97 4runner 4x4 with 226,000 miles. Seems like alot to me but I keep seeing mileage is not that big a concern with these 4runners. Seems like its well taken care of. There are issues. Some chips in the windshield, needs new tires in the next year or so, valve covers are leaking, the steering rack is leaking out both boots, small bit of seepage on the transfercase.

The car recently had the timing belt and a full tune up done, the shocks are new as well all the way around. The truck drives pretty well, clean carfax and title and the smog was just done.

I talked the dealer down to 3800, should I bite?

I'd pass. 226k isn't that bad, but with the extra work needed it will add up. If all the issues were fixed then $3,800 would be a good price. Also is it 5 speed or auto? Locker? For 1k more you can get one that won't have as many issues and less miles.

It's reasonable but I wouldn't call it a great deal. That little stuff does add up. Then you have shocks, coils, ball joints, axle seals, etc.

Its an auto, and honestly I dont know if its a locker or not, did not look. These 4runners seem to go for a premium out here in Colorado. I havent found a 3rd Gen for anywhere near this price.

I understand the pricing now that I know you're in Colorado. It's pretty tough out there. If you feel like you can get the smaller things done for cheap then go for it.

Actually mileage above 175,000 miles is a BIG concern because after 175,000 miles many things will definitely be "on their way out" even on a well maintained truck. It just will run better than any other truck with 175,000 miles.

These include: brake rotors & pads (not calipers), steering rack, rear seals, radiator, LBJs, and the engine itself, specifically the heads.
