Looking at getting a 3rd gen

Hey guys so I come from the Classics section, I had a 1994 4Runner, but unfortunately I rolled it in an accident. (Not my fault) But my truck is completely totaled, slide on the drivers side into a telephone pole. Luckily I'm alright, just sore. Anyways to the Questions,

Looking at getting a 3rd gen. Anything i should look for when im getting one? Common problems? Trying not to get screwed over so any help would be awesome. Thanks guys!

Type that im looking for is pretty much any 3rd gen with a 5-spd and the 3.4L obviously. It will turn into a trail rig like my other one.

If you're looking for a third Gen to off road with, then shoot for year that has a rear e-locker. 2001-02 are out of your search so that should help narrow it down.
 
Welcome to the 3rd gen side of the house. I too came from the classics side and I'm not going back lol. IMO I would stick with 98-2002 4runners. The 96-97 had some problems with the HG. Some common issues with the 3rd gens are the "strawberry milkshake " problem, the lower ball joints pop out, rear heater lines get rotted, valve cover bolts tend to loosen over time. Depending on the area of which you live, I would check the frame for any rust and ask the seller for maintenance records . That's pretty much sums it up, but I'll let the 3rd Gen experts chime in more on this. Good luck!
 
Yup i looked through the stickies and never even saw that sticky. My bad. Thanks for you helps guys! Probably looking at like a 97-98 or so
