Looking for a 4runner specific write up for setting backlash.

Hey I am going to install the rear E locker in my 97 runner pretty soon and I am looking for a write up for setting backlash on the rear axle. I did a search here and google but didn't find a specific one for our rigs. The write ups I am using for the retrofit don't talk about setting backlash. Anyone know of a good write up?

Incase anyone else is looking to do the retrofit here are the write ups I am using.

Why do you need to set the back lash if you just installing a whole pumpkin? Are you changing out the gears too?

No I am not changing out the gears. I am just swaping out the entire 3rd member. I wasn't sure if I needed to worry about backlash at all or not. I did want to measure it and see if it is still within tolerances. To be honest before I got the info from these guys and watched a few youtube videos I had no idea what backlash was or what it took to measure it and adjust it. So thanks for the replies guys. ZUK has a ton of information on that site.

Singtoe you think I should even worry about it? I got it from a junkyard who specializes in toyota's so the guys knows a thing or 2 about yota's.

you don't have to check anything if the third hasn't been apart. But since it's out there isn't any thing wrong with checking the bl and I would suggest cranking the carrier bearings to at least 100lbs. if there are miles on the 3rd and there are because its used I would tighten everything up. don't mess with pinion depth but backlash and carrier bearing are pretty easy and important to your 3rd surviving long term. Good Luck.

Just my opinion, but if your buying a used part, don't adjust anything. If you tighten things up, it might mess the way the ring and pinon are seated together.

You can do a visual chk at the junk yard when you pick the part up.

Turn the pinion and it should have some resistance. If it spins to easily, reject.

Turn the ring back and forth, there should be some play. If the is no play or it has more then a 1/16" of play, you should reject.

The Yard should garentee the diff, so once it is installed, and if it doesn't make any noise then it should be good for the the long haul. If it is noisy, pull and replace.
