Looking hard at a Gen 2 with low miles

Going way back here. My rules for a vehicle: reliability, a/c, sound system, sunroof a bonus (I know how to roll windows down) and it needs to be able to do stuff. I don't mind repairing older cars.

So, I have my eyes on a 93 MANUAL 4WD 4 Runner with < 100k on it. Two general questions:

1) I've owned a 96 before and the 4runner was damn legend. Other than the obvious, what else should I look for?

2) This vehicle is out of state. Suggestions for finding an independent anally retentive mechanic to go over it? I'm not looking for perfect, but it does need to go from the west coast to the east coast.

If you are in the Atlanta area, there will be a very low mileage 2018 RAV4 AWD on the market soon...

I've owned a gen 2, 3 -gen 3s and now a gen 5. Many people complain about the 4 runner being gutless. This is actually the case with the gen 2.

I loved that vehicle but wasn't a huge fan of that engine. Never had issues with it beyond the lack of power but it was leased and I went from that to a gen 3 at the end of the lease.

You might find the 2nd gen disappointing if your reference is a 3rd gen. Even with low miles it will be a chore being as old as it is. I would even say the same for a 3rd gen now. They need literally everything at this age.

For the ’93 manual 4WD Toyota 4Runner, I’d mainly check:

• Frame rust (biggest dealbreaker)
• Clutch & transmission feel (no grinding/slipping)
• Cooling system condition (important for a cross-country drive)
• Suspension/steering play geometry dash
• Any major leaks (engine, trans, transfer case)

For an out-of-state inspection, look for a Toyota/4WD specialty shop near the seller. Call ahead and ask for a detailed pre-purchase inspection with photos and written notes. Local 4Runner or off-road Facebook groups are also great for mechanic recommendations.
