Good luck hunting. Low mileage gen 3's are out there but are becoming scarce. Also a low mileage 4runner may scare you with the price. I got my 2000 limited 2 years ago with 140000 and it was $9800.00. I couldn't talk them down because people were coming from VA, TN and GA to get it. As a matter of fact I only got it because I flashed cash and they sold it to me. Someone from VA had tried to use their credit card and something went wrong in the transaction and they had a role back on the way and they called and had them turn around. He was not pleased at all about this but......

I missed a 96 with 120K this wknd. This guy told me someone was bringing him money in three days but wouldn't sell it to me for the same price so I walked.

I just went through this exact thing. I can’t make a new post thread of my own yet, but will as soon as I can. In the mean time, I will outline it all on my 4Runner website. I won’t mention it either because I don’t want to come across like I am spamming.
Anyway, overall in short toyotarunner1, my search for what you are looking for took me 2.5 months of looking. Not casual looking, but looking 10 times a day every day for TWO and a half months. I hope you won’t have to go through what I did

It just reeks of a car dealer trying to flip it, the whole sob story in the description sounds so typical, if it's even a legitimate sale.

unless your heart is set on a 4wd, here is an extra clean, 2nd owner, 72,000 mile 2wd, All preventive work done (New OEM radiator, hoses, water pump, timing belt, tuneup, all fluids flushed, new tires, rims recoated, front windows tinted, OEM fog lights, New stereo w/backup camera, small lift about 2", spacers) all done at my local Toyota dealer (except stereo, BestBuy installed and lift at local 4wd shop). The paint is in fantastic shape, sits in the garage, never been hit that I know of. I want more than it's worth to most, because it is so clean. you can PM if you like..... sorry for the big picture....

I dont think its a dealer cause its in front of someone's house and when you press on contacts it's a name and phone number. He did take his license plate off for the pics.

I really feel like people who are paying extra to find a low mileage 3rd gen are throwing away good money.
There is a point of diminishing returns when it comes to low miles on old vehicles as you run into vehicles that have sat abandoned much of their lives. The low miles kind of mask the fact that the vehicles have not been used regularly and have their own set of issues that need addressing. But more than that really – why pay money for low miles when the 4runner is quite easily capable of 400,000 or more mile?
I understand paying extra for a truck that has been exceedingly well maintained or that has been restored or modified in a way that adds real value, but just paying for low miles...no thanks, I’d rather buy a beautifully maintained and modified 4runner with high miles for a reasonable price – than pay some crazy-ass 15k for some low mileage grandpa-mobile that’s going to need plenty of routine maintenance in the days ahead.
In fact, I’d happily dump 10k into my truck right now with nearly half a million miles already on it — long before I would drop 15k on an 01 with 88k miles. When it comes to 3rd gens IMHO – mileage is nearly irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Maintenance and rust would probably be my biggest concerns for a 3rd gen if I were in the market for another one.

I agree with you StreetCreeper. My wife was worried about mileage and it was difficult for me to relay to her that if I wanted to resell the vehicle eventually, mileage might matter. Her “feel good” mileage limit was 175K - thankfully the rig I just bought today had 172K
I was also kind of nudged by others to buy new or newer, but as you just said, I would rather get what I got today and then pump in the difference of what I paid and the newer version.

just bought my first 4Runner last week - this 2000 SR5 with 223k mi for $3000
he was asking $3500, but I brought the cash and he agreed. Bought from the 2nd owner private party. Had it put on a lift after I bought it and checked out. Could use the rack and pinion replaced (leaking) , a few suspension parts and possible rear tailgate window regulator replaced (doesn't go down all the way with a slight grinding noise right before last point downward)
Overall its in great shape and runs great. It has larger tires than normal, so speedo is off. Going to put new rims and appropriate size tires on it.
Anything special with a TRD version? help and comments appreciated.

Find someone in a dry state and head out and get one. You should be able to find one under 200k for mid 4's all day. Well worth the trip to get a true rust free rig. I paid $4600 for a 96 with 220 on it not a spec of rust on it a few years ago. Put in a new radiator after it blew up, thermostat, and some hoses is all that was needed. Drivers seat is broke down springs but not torn. Everything else including AC works perfectly. Of course I replaced the OEM worn out suspension.

Those are nice rims you have already, they are called the snowflake wheels or something like that. I think they came off a Tacoma or something. Also, there is no TRD version of a 3rd gen 4Runner. That’s just a decal the previous owner put on there. Looks like a nice truck though! Congrats!

As far as tires go...how much do you want to spend. I run two sets of tires...winter and summer. If your running one set you can probably find original 16" wheels and buy new tires cheaper than 17". Diameter is dependent on the tire you choose. You can have 17" wheels with the diameter of some 15" wheels and basic tire combos.
Still laugh about the day I bought a brand new 04 Chev (still have it) off the lot. Told them to take the 17" off the one I bought and put the 16" from the truck next to it. Salesman could not even comprehend why I would want that. Regardless it happened and I'm $1,000s ahead because of it.

Tires are likely only off maybe by 3% so if you're speedo reads 100 you are doing 97mph so the diff at 50 is barely a mile and half off.
There is no TRD version and the previous owner just threw a sticker on there and not even close to where Toyota puts them. The closest thing to a TRD model was the sport version which weren't badged but had the scoop,taller coils and usually had the monochromatic paint scheme.
