Looking to upgrade my stereo (2018 4runner) Looking for help

Hey Guys,

I am looking to upgrade the stereo in my 2018 5th gen, as I do not know much about upgrading the headunit. I already have the alpine ilx from my fj cruiser, along with an alpine amp and sub (not in a case).

Looking for some advice and recommendation on:
- wiring harness
- adapter for steering wheel controls?
- a black bezel (I have a TRD Pro with black interior trim)
- how to I re-use the Toyota backup Camera? Do I need to install an aftermarket backup camera?

Anything else that I will need? If you can provide some links it would be awesome!

With the Alpine headunit, would I need my old amp to power the speakers? In my 2008 tundra, after I installed an older double din alpine, there is virtually no base coming out of the speakers.

I just use Crutchfield. They may be more expensive, although you can probably find the same parts elsewhere, but they will match the parts to your vehicle.

There are two basic dash kits: metra and schoshe. Look them up in the search for examples.

I don't know the answer on output, but there are plenty of threads here about head units, subs, etc., so you should be able to get an answer in these threads as well.

Two words: idatalink Maestro

Pick your head unit, make sure it works with the idatalink unit, and all your worries will be alleviated.

As for the color of the Dash replacement... Take it to a body shop to color match. Should be ~ $75 - $100.

And FYI, Metra makes a radio surround that's already painted. It matches very well -- but that said, I've had both Scosche and Metra installed, and the Scosche is better quality and far more secure. I still plan to eventually paint my Scosche surround and swap with the Metra.

Also second going with Crutchfield, and in fact, their prices really aren't any higher. If they are, it's incrementally more expensive and I found their prices quite fair considering they do all the work making sure you get what you need. I installed a Kenwood DMX905S (with wireless android auto) which has been very solid, and Kenwood currently has rebates (though I bet if you wait a few days you'll find deals).

I don't think the Maestro works with the Alpine ilx 107 :(

Looks like an awesome product, I am reaching out to a local dealer to see if it will work with the headunit I have.
 
Crutchfield ALL THE WAY, I've been using them for 20yrs now..which is crazy to imagine because it just used to be a catalog in the mail..no website! :scared:

They have the steering wheel kit, the rear camera kit (plus the option to add it if you don't have it), as well as all the stereo options you could want. I personally am a bit partial (as an iPhone owner) to the new units with Appleplay..I drive rental cars two weeks a month for work, and the option to use the same apps as the phone (Spotify/Maps), and the native Apple connectivity directly through the radio is awesome and never fails to connect right up as soon as I plug it in (USB) or get in the vehicle (with Blutooth).
I personally picked the Sony AX-5000 unit they had, came with the matching bezel from Crutchfield with only a single small adjustment knob on the left. No DVD or CD but it's simple, has an internal amp, and does everything I want seemlessly..I just wish I still had my "4Runner" logo pop up on the screen like I had on the simple factory b&w digital display.

Whatever has the right combination of 1. it will fit 2. it's on sale and 3. decent reviews. Even $20 speakers from walmart would be an upgrade over the factory speakers (though you should probably try doing better than that!)
 
For speaker recommendations:

I recently picked up the 6.5” Kicker DS for the rest door’s, along with the Scosche adapters. Fits perfect and sounds great. Crutchfield also included the wiring harness free.

Note: Crtchfield included, for free, mounts to mount the 6.5” speaker to the front 6x9 spot, but I didn’t use these. I already had the Focal component set up front. If I had to do it again I probably would’ve just bought 6.5’s for up front and used the included Metra mount, then separate teeeters, and this would’ve still been cheaper than the $270-300 for the Focal front component set.

Forgot to update everybody. I ended up calling Crutchfield Canada and received some awesome customer service.

I ordered the maestro, bezel, harness and connectors. Just waiting for my body shop to quote me for paint.

Paint for the center console? Are you doing all the pieces to match as well? I just did my install and ordered some awesome looking raw carbonfiber vinyl wrap, can't decide between Magnet grey or wrapping them
