loose oil drain bolt

did an oil change today. it was gorgeous for this time of year.

when i went to remove the drain bolt, (14mm), it was not tight at all, i took it off with my hand. this had happened about twice before. i figure i am not tightening it hard enough - how hard do you have to go at it? I use a 1/2" drive ratchet and turn until it's rather tight (to me of course). I don't have a 3/8" torque wrench and the 1/2"drive torque I got is a bit too big. I think I crushed the gasket one time that's when I started dialing back. Fortunately as loose as it was, knocking on wood, it didn't leak, amazing.

and I used a Bosch D3330 oil filter today. I made a mess pre-oiling it. I don't suppose the Bosch is pre-oiled, correct? I know the OEM Toyota one is pre-oiled. It's the first time I used non OEM filter on the vehicle.

18lb-ft is the proper torque what kind if gasket are you using the plastic ones or the paper like fiber ones that toyota uses. Usually the fiber ones are good the plastic ones not so much

From searching the forum, drain bolt on 4th gen should be about 30 ft/lb. 18 sounds too loose. Gasket is from Toyota service department. It's black and looks to be the paper fiber kind.

This just happened to me today, I was flabbergasted. I use the Toyota drain plug washer, not sure what material but it is black on both sides. I change my own oil so I am sure it was tightened. I believe the drain plug washer is doing this. I am definitely going to check it a few times.

Had it happen to me once and I attribute it to the drain plug gasket. I used a nylon one with the "ribs" and it was less than hand tight after 5k miles. I tighten the drain plugs on all my vehicles and other vehicles the same so I know it was tight enough.

I now metal gasket with the rubber on the inside and have yet to have a problem over the course of 4 oil changes. However for the wife's car I use the blue fiber ones from Toyota and haven't had a problem with those so who knows.

I have had problems with most plastic, copper, and rubber inside metal types of oil drain washer/gaskets at some point or another over the years on various vehicles. I have not had any problems with the plain old aluminum type on any vehicle.
I do currently use the factory Toyota gaskets that appear to be aluminum with a thin rubber coating.

*Oh and these fit my runner, my 2 corolla's and I think will fit most yota's.

I have a 2007 V6 2WD SR5 that I found Eng oil drain plug spec to be torque to be 30 + ft lbs. Due to past feel experience I stop at 25 ft lbs (tight and not bottomed) with Dealers fiber or metal/rubber combo gaskets. I have not had a problem with a loose plug (but will ck tomorrow, LOL). Where did I get the spac (I felt it had to be the owner’s manual but c/n verify that? I saw 18 ft lbs online and by feel that would be too little IMO, except possibly for the type of gasket used.

I have a Haynes Manual for our 2001 4 Cyl Camry with the Eng oil plug spec at 36 ft lbs and I stop at 30 ft lbs due to feel. Plus I check my torque wrenches against another before using it.
