I'm noticing between 3,000 and 3,500 RPM a surging or lack of acceleration. I have only noticed this in 2nd gear under moderate to heavy throttle input. The RPMs never jump up like slippage so I don't think it is transmission related. It almost seems like it runs out of fuel. I am going to start with cleaning the MAF and if that doesn't help I'll try the fuel filter. WOT from a stop it doesn't do it. No codes present. Any other ideas? 1996, 3.4, auto with 235,000, TIA.

My vote is a clogged fuel filter. Like you said, under heavy throttle is when the engine has the highest fuel demand.
I'd also try a couple of fuel injector cleaners in the tank to make sure it's not injector related.
