lost power popping sound

Our 97 4 runner started popping and losing power. We thought it was out of gas but it wasn't. It would start but when we accelerated it would lose power and start popping sound with hardly any power. Any ideas help if you can.

Any cel lights coming on? Is the popping like a backfire sound? I'd start with a visual inspection to make sure no hoses or wires to spark plugs have come off. Then check intothings like fuel delivery. Make sure fuel filter is not plugged. Then move on to things like spark plugs. Process of elimination.

Probably bad sparkplug wires.

Or plugs. When I first got mine, the plugs and wires had never been changed. They call it "spark knock."

Thought I was loosing my mind, and needed to replace my transmission.

I had NO CEL or anything. Just had to get in there and change the plugs and wires.
