Loud grinding/screeching/clank on startup

When I go to turn on my 2002 with 164k I experience a loud grinding, screeching and some times a little clank instead of the normal cranking over. The noise is only experienced when Turning the key. It stops once you let go of the key and the car starts. This only last for a few seconds and every thing goes back to working fine once the car is started. This has been happening for a week now and I'm thinking it's the starter? Do starters just go bad and not work or can you experience a noise like this? I have searchered but still can't find an answer. All help is much appreciated.

Sounds like you have a bad flywheel- some of the teeth are stripped and the starter is grinding against it.
