Hey i got a 98 4runner limited, and the low fuel light is always on, but will go away if i hit a bump or something and then come back again. Is this the fuel sending unit or something else?

Could be the sender. Could also be a loose wire or connection that is opening/closing the circuit when bumped. Get your meter out and start huntin'

Fuel sending unit.

There is a floater attached to a metal rod, which is then connected to a plastic lever that runs on a resistor pack.

The plastic lever is held in place by a soft mechanism. It may be stuck. If you don't want to lower the gas tank, Just continue to run with half a tank of gas and with few bump, you might get the floater unit to function.

Drop the tank when it is almost empty. It is very heavy.

Place a jack with a piece of wood to support the weight of the tank between the tank and the jack.

Lift the jack until it touches the tank

Remove all the bolts around and the flexible hose going to the gas cap and burp... line

Let the tank rest on the jack now.

Slowly lower the jack

After dropping about 6-8 inches or so, disconnect the wire connectors and the gas lines.

That's it.
It is easy to remove the fuel sending unit.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the info. i Have the same problem on my 98. The problem has just started after i ran the tank really low. Been over a few bumps and no luck even after filling it to the brim.

Wanted to confirm if the Low Fuel light is linked to the fuel gauge as my gauge is working fine just the light aint going off?

Only other thing i have changed is the E85 conversion and been running 100% E85 last few tanks. Could this have affected it at all?

Did you figure out the fix for the low fuel light

Did you ever find a fix for this? I have a '98 and have had the fuel light on for years. The gauge works fine, so I've been hesitant to drop the tank and go hunting for the problem. Occasionally the light will flicker when going over a bump and I suspect an electrical connection. Would like to fix it if it doesn't require lots of effort or expensive parts

That is one of the things that really bugs me about my T4R, but I have learned to just live with it and laugh at it. My gauge goes full retard sometimes, like showing beyond empty with the reserve light flashing right after I fill it up, or showing full when it is almost empty. The reserve light almost always comes on when I have about 7 gallons left in the tank.

I haven't felt motivated enough to fix it, which involves some money and a fair amount of work. If I have less than 300 miles on my tank, then I don't worry too much about it, because I know that once I shut it off and turn it back on, it usually reads correctly.
