Lowering front diff

The front diff on my 96 is leaking. It appears to be coming out the top of the diff. I am not sure if the breather tube is messed up or something? Can I unbolt the bolts that hold the front diff in place and lower it some to inspect without removing the cv axles?

If it is leaking from the top, first check the breather line. You should be able to see it, if not reach it from below and behind the diff.

It comes out at the top, visible in the above pick just to the right of the differential ring gear.

edit: Also make sure it isn't engine oil, leaked from the filter during an oil change...

Quite certain its gear oil. I can see the breather but can't my hand in there to feel if loose or broken.

That's how people put in spacers from Total Chaos and the like. Put a floor jack underneath for support, undo the 2 bolts and drop it slightly. Don't expect tons of droop but should give you a little extra wiggle room. Might help to have weight off wheels

From the looks of it, it looked like the soft line at the nipple failed(?). There was gear oil seeping out from that point. It was a huge pain in the butt without pulling the whole diff, but with the help of my son and some really long bent tip pliers we were able to slip a piece of about 3' long 5/16ths fuel line on the nipple. Just bypassed the soft/hard line combo that was factory, and added a new breather. Took it out for a spin, does not appear to be leaking anymore.
