Lowering the truck

1997 2wd
I want to know what would be the easiest and cheapest way to lower the truck.
I just want it 4" to 5" inches lower.
Being a 2wd, I don't need it this high.

JUST 4" to 5" lower...? That's an enormous drop and will NOT be cheap. I cannot even fathom the amount of work that would take.

I know Burtman Industries used to sell springs for like 1.25" lower...

Not really my thing, and I know nothing about lowering a 4Runner, but, I applaud you for doing something different and can appreciate the work that goes into a lowered truck. Just because it's not my jam doesn't mean someone hasn't put a lot of time and money into it.

You might could pull the struts off the front end of one of Toyotas cars that would bolt up.
 
The rear wouldn't be hard at all, just need some shorter springs, bags and shocks. With the solid rear axle the camber won't change.

For the front, in addition to the same things as the rear you'll need a solid fabricator to cut things up, weld them back together and reinforce them to get the camber correct.

And none of that takes into consideration what the suspension will interfere with on the frame or body at that height.

In other words, nobody here has done it and 3rd gens are not a good platform for lowering. I'd recommend getting a truck that's been done before unless you're a world class fabricator. But if that were true you wouldn't be asking how to do it.

check out the tacoma boards...a lot of guys using DJM kit. Should work in the front and you can easily cut the rear springs and get shorter shocks.

Post a picture of your truck. Maybe it's on a mild lift? Or if you know, tell us if it's stock or has aftermarket lift suspension.
 
The front cross member is going to turn into a plow if you lower it 5''. Swap the body onto a 2wd tacoma frame and you can go as low as you want.
 
Maybe 4" to 5" might be to much.
I just want to get it low enough so I don't have to jump up into it.
It a 2wd, 4cly, 5 speed. Nothing special.
The rear looks easy enough. Just cut a coil off the spring.
Can cut a coil off the front spring, but might get into problems with the camber angle. It has a little adjustment.
Anyone have any idea how much angle can be adjusted with the stock bushings????
 
Let's not snark the guy just cause he wants to go the opposite direction as the rest of us. Although those pics were hilarious.
 
You can go with smaller tires too. That could get you down about 2" or so. Just recalibrate your speedometer otherwise your mileage will go up faster than what's really happening. And honestly the 2" may even be enough to help you out

I couldn't agree more! This is supposed to be a place where people can come and learn and share knowledge/experiences, not a place where people are put down for a different idea of what they want in a 4Runner.
