MAF Mass Air Flow cold idle hiccup, bad but not failed ??

Information just in case someone else has this problem.

I am still occasionally replacing parts in my vehicle with 156k doing a midlife refresh. My t4r ran well, did not smoke, ran cool, always cranked well and always got fairly good mileage. I have always noticed it tended to hiccup 2 or 3 times when first started in the morning. It was like a split second bump from the engine. I had cleaned the MAF with the proper spray and proper technique about 4 months after owning it, but this hiccup/bump continued.

I decided to replace the MAF sensor just because of it's age. Since replacing the MAF sensor, I have had no further bump / hiccup feeling when starting it.
The temp and mileage have not changed and are still good.

When you say “hiccup” do you mean a stumble ? Or hiccup means it refuses to start for a quick second ?

It was a split second bump like hitting a small pothole in the rode (but it was sitting still of course). Like someone kicks the back of your seat one time. Perhaps the smallest backfire with no noise at all. The engine didn't miss a cyclinder it was like it stopped for a tenth of a second. You could definetly feel it.

I know some would say that replacing the whole thing is overkill, but at least a good start to clean the whole thing off the car would be a good first step for the rest of us.
