major body roll

This guy was on a bad angle, but really wasn't going to flop over.
I got on to counter-balance to help out (note, always get on the uphill side)

This is a scary angle, I was hanging on to stay in my seat, but all 4 wheels stayed on the ground.

OK, the only off-roading I have ever done is on a Mtn bike, so I have no business on this thread. But I will say this, that picture and your rig are RAD!
 
I know this is a very old thread ... how much would it have helped the gentleman to have steel rims on his truck, and thereby counteract the high centre of gravity from his lift?
 
Steel rims are heavier and lower the centre of gravity of the vehicle.

Been wheeling and driving assorted Toyota a for over 30 years, never noticed a difference in the COG between alloy or steel rims.
Too many other variables come into play like how tall the truck is, track width, how much passengers weigh etc etc.
Experience also driving military junk all over the country and other places..

And how do you know the 4runner pictured in the op's pic doesn't have steel rims, his avatar pic is a different truck, by color at least...just curious how you made the determination

Good point. I assumed he had alloy wheels, simply because they are more popular. That said, people on this forum have written that they prefer steel rims on their winter tires, because they find the extra weight gives them more traction. That's different from lower COG but the higher weight should also achieve that.

I always thought that when the high centre of gravity of 4runners is brought up, steel rims will lower the centre of gravity. Certainly, when one looks at the photo from the OP, with the truck in danger of rolling over, the extra weight of steel rims would help (and, yes, as you pointed out, I can't assert he used alloys).
