Tire Clearance help

New to me 4runner is on 315 Mts and rides pretty shit, they're very loud and rub as well. They look cool but i dont really want to regear. Trying to decide whats the best AT size to run with the current lift. Im unsure what the lift height is but it looks to be about 3(ish)in. Some combo of Bilstein, OME, JBA upper control arms, and a two in body lift with wheels that have a -38offset.

I'd like to run 285/70/17, will I clear at full lock with no further mods or will I have to run a smaller tire?

No direct experience, since with a 2.5" lift I still run the original 265/70-16 tires. Common belief from years of reading this forum is that the next size up--265/75-16 should run on any ≈2" lifted 3rd Gen 4R w/o rubbing. Not a huge tire, but they really help the appearance and look more appropriate for a lifted vehicle. Since I'm not interested in the expense of re-gearing, and want to preserve what power and acceleration the stock truck has, I've played it safe and stuck with stock size.

The wider the wheel, the wider the "Scrub Radius". The wider the scrub radius, the more your tires will rub. Wheel spacers also make the scrub radius worse. I have 285/75/16 and only rub at full compression on the front where it hits the fender liner, most likely at the top rear. That's a rare occurrence. You can see what I'm running on my truck in my sig. I don't remember the offset of the wheels. I started with 285/75's on the stock wheels and didn't have any rubbing at the pinch weld or the front lower bumper valance. After getting the 16x8" wheels, I had to trim the valance and pound the pinch weld flat. After installing the JBA arms and getting an alignment with max Caster of 3.0 degrees, the clearance got a lot better at the back. I'd still have to trim the valance if I hadn't done that already. 285/70/17 is very close in diameter to a 285/75/16, but it may sit a bit wider on the rim due to the shorter sidewall giving the tire a more squared profile at the sidewall/tread shoulder.

As far as re-gearing, I have a 5 speed and I went with 4.56 R&P. Made a very positive improvement in performance.

Hope this helps.
