Make a 97' 4Runner 4WD

My brother and I have switched cars, and he has given me his '97 4Runner for my '96 Acura because he didn't want to pay gas. I loved the trade, and love the 4Runner. My question is does any of you know how to covert it to 4WD. I know i need a new tranny, transfer case, and and front end axle, but i'm not so sure where to find the parts. Any help is great. thanks!

This depends on how involved you want to be...

Option 1. Ship your rig to Addicted Off Road
Option 2. GOOGLE solid axle swap 4 runner and start reading.
option 3. Sell this one buy 4 WD (might be your best $$$ bet)

There is always the option of doing it yourself and getting the gratification. But as far as ease and low cost, I would sell it and buy a 4wd version.

There is a lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself.. I agree 100%
Wilmington Runner Whats you level of comfort with welding? That would be the big deciding factor. This is not the project to learn how to weld on..

Sell your 4runner and buy a 4wd one. Otherwise, I think your best bet is to buy a wrecked 4wd and switch over everything.

Welcome! :hello:

Unless you feel very comfortable wrenching on your new to you truck, your best bet would probably be to trade it for a 4wd, like others have said. However, if you really want to keep it, there are a few members on here who have built some badass 2wd runners that are very capable off road. Check out member ChildrenofBodom's build thread for inspiration if you wanna go that route. :)

if ya got the loot ..... throw the trail gear SAS kit under it with a decent axle. they make adapter kits to fit the old skool t-cases to the 3.4 tranny. just my .02

IMO you dont need to sell it just to get 4wd.. Knowing how to wrench on it would def save you some cash though. You shouldnt have any problems finding the parts from a wrecked/parted out runner. There was one in the classifieds on here not long ago.
