Map light issue, can anyone w/ a FSM help?

Hey folks,

I just recently purchased a 2000 Toyota 4Runner.

The car is 6 years old and came with some strange quirks.

When I was inspecting the vehicle, I failed to check if the map lights were working. I'm sure the previous owners knew it, but weren't so forthcoming with the information. I wonder what else they forgot to tell me.

Anyhow, I opened up the map light to check if the bulbs were burnt out, but they looked fine to me. I suspect the fuse might be burnt out. I opened up the little cover next to the hood release latch and looked for the fuse, but I couldn't locate it. Check the fuse box in the engine compartment and couldn't find it there either. Can anyone point me out in the right direction?

I also have this other weird quirk I noticed. When I put my car into PARK, NEUTRAL, REVERSE, or the other gears besides DRIVE, inside the gauge cluster underneath the speedometer a little light would light up, telling me which gear I'm in. When I put the car in DRIVE, the D doesn't light up. Is this normal? I hope the previous owner didn't disconnect a sensor on the transmission to hide an underlying problem. HELP!!

I can't be of much help, but when I put my 02 into Drive the D does light up, both on the dash and next to the shifter itself.

If the fuses are fine I would try to replace the bulbs in the map lights and see what happens. You could also get an amp tester, whatever the official name is, and see if the light is even getting power.

It somewhat common on these vehicles for the bulb to burn out since the majority of the time the vehicle is in use it is in Drive.

I checked the bulbs, and they're good.

I ran a light test and realized that there isn't power flowing through the light socket. I think theres a blown fuse.

Anyone know where this fuse is?
