Maybe save me $150...tell me if this sounds like a CV issue.

Sorry, it's kind of a double post, but I was going to change my CV axles tomorrow, and if its not CV's, I could get my money back. When I had my brother drive by, I would swear the sound is coming from my UCA bushings and not my CV's. It seems like the sound is too high off the ground to be CV's.

What do you think?

honestly that sounds exactly like when your wheeling and break a cv and you keep driving as the outer grenades, I have also heard that same noise when Jimmy from OL blew his spider gears up.

I doubt its either because those two would be obvious. here is a little idea. pull the cv and put it together and slowly drive down you driveway for a few feet and see if the noise s there. In 40 minutes you could know if its cv's or not

You mean re-use the existing CV? Just take it out and put it back in? Also, the noise only happens when articulating or turning to the right.
 
My 4runner makes a similar sound. I was thinking it was worn bushings since the sound goes away if I hit all my bushings with some WD-40



Nevermind, I listened to it again and it sounds like binding

No you wont ruin any thing. I would go down a dirt road or drive like that for miles, But a few rotations in the driveway shouldnt hurt anything. THe wheel bearings are pressed in and the hubs need a 20 ton press to get them apart. It should be just fine
 
well it definitely was NOT a CV issue. Big thanks to maclean216 for helping me change out both the CV's anyway, but the noise is still there. I give up... its a truck!

Didn't even take that long. After CV axle swap, new bilstein 5100s, and sway bar end links, the sound is still there. I realized when I changed my TRE's, I think just the outer ones were replaced. Inners next?
 
Disconnect the sway bar, it may be a bad link.

I am in agreement with ryan though, that it does sound like a bushing in the control arm. Do spray the bushings down, starting with either the uppers or lowers first and then go from there.

FML....

After all of that...all I needed was the $6 can of wd40 I always had sitting there and quickly spray it on the LCA bushings.

Good thing I spent ~$500 trying to chase this noise down.

Sorry to hear that. The WD40 will only last a few weeks before it begins to squeak again. There might be a better spray lubricant out there that may last longer.
 
At least you know where the problem is. I have never pressed or torched them out ( I have a small squeak in my right LCA) but there are plenty of threads of members replacing them.

I'll have to look into a longer lubricant now that it is the problem.

I might have to save some more money now before I decide to replace the bushings all together. It's weird that its not a squeak like a rubber bushing, but more of a clunk like you can hear in the video.

I'm guessing the sound is the bushing binding then giving. I'm in the same situation with my 99'. I figure just save up for new LightRacing or Total Chaos UCA's and solve the bushing issue. I'm sure that replacing the bushings are more time consuming and more of a PITA then getting new UCA's
 
so its the bushing on the UCA? luckily i was planning on replacing my UCA next month so that should hopefully take away my problem as well! I'm glad you got to be the ginny pig on this one and not me ;) i will have to try WD-40 on mine when i get her back and see if that solves my Popping noise as well

No, its the LCA. Not the UCA. Good luck, hope it solves your issue too!
 
I had a similar clunk, but it was from a UCA. The bushings were toast. You could grab the uca and get it to move about 1/2" from side to side. I found a used one for $15 bucks shipped and problem was solved
