Midwest and NorthEast non-LE 5th gens...snow?

If I had to pull my wife's car out from time to time I'd want better tires as well, I can just hear that phone call while sitting in the couch watching it snow...



I don't mind driving my wife's Audi in the snow, much lighter vehicle is much easier to stop. Once we get more than a few inches it's not fun anymore, but we usually just take my 4Runner everywhere cuz I love driving it.

Exactly. If my daughter (RAV4) my son (Subaru Crosstrek) my wife (Honda CRV) and me are going to go anywhere when it's slick, the 4Runner is the vehicle of choice, even if only one or two of us are going out. Now, they will use their vehicles to get here in the snow, but once here the 4Runner is what they want to ride.

Had about 20" during a particular storm last night.. Had no issues going on untouched roads.

That seems odd that you would put studded tires on a TRD Pro. Really not necessary unless you like the sound they make. I would have to imagine a set of studded tires that size would be very expensive as well.

Depends on where you live.

I have considered swapping my LTD with a Trail but part of my commute involves Berthoud Pass. Steep, 180 degree switchbacks, ice, snow, and other drivers. The valley I live in is (extremely) cold and very snowy so pretty much everyone runs studded tires up here, even the UPS and FedEx trucks.

I'm sure part time 4WD and standard snow tires would work OK, I just don't feel like compromising.

Wow, that's impressive! Were you in 4HI the entire time? Was it mostly a flat, straight route? Or did it involve curves and/or hills?

It was mostly straight and flat, a few minor inclines. I don't know if it was necessary but I was mainly in 4lo in the un-plowed sections.

Hey all,

I'm considering getting a 5th gen SR5 Premium or Trail edition 4Runner.

I live in South Western Pennsylvania, and we get our fair share of snow, slush, rain, and ice. I used to have an 86 Toyota Pickup 4x4 years ago, and drove it occasionally in the winter, but since then, I've had either front-wheel or AWD vehicles.

I know the Limited has AWD, but I really don't like the looks or the cost of those. But I really do love the 5th gen 4Runners.

So I'm asking non-Limited owners, how does your SR5/TE 4Runner do in snowy weather?

I put 4 Blizzaks under my SR5 Premium and it gets me through the Utah mountains to ski no problem.

I have a LE but all of the 4runners pretty much drive the same in 4x4. It's a capable truck as long as you're a capable driver. Just be sure to throw some snow tires on and watch for ice. :keyboard:

I recently traded for a 2017 Limited but thoroughly loved my 2015 Trail in the snow for three winters. You cannot go wrong with a 4Runner. I did like the idea of the locking differential on the Trail if needed but the TRAC system seems to work well.
