Moab/Kokopelli in September?

My wife and I are planning our first Moab trip and want to combine it with completing the Kokopelli trail from Loma, Colorado into Moab.

We both have 9 days of vacation in September and plan do the approx 145mile Kokopelli trail in about 2.5/3 days then spend the next 3 days in Moab.

Having never done the Kokopelli or been to Moab I'm interested in any advice you guys have for us regarding the trail, time of year, resources I should get or read (I have a book on the Kokopelli trail and maps and the Charles Wells book for Moab)

Also if any of you would like to join and be open to plan something out this September we would love to have company at any point whether it just be in Moab or doing the whole darn thing. Just post or PM me!

We're a couple from Venezuela living in Miami. We're trying to do Colorado and Moab in September or October too...

Our problem is the language... We can speak but not perfectly... Any problem with that?

I ran the last leg of Kokopelli in May, from Dewey Bridge on. Here is a link to the full trip report and pictures for that day.

This last leg is actually the hardest section of the entire trail (ARC, I think you forgot about Rose Garden Hill!), and makes for a very long day! Top of the World is a must do, period (the view at the end is the best in Moab)! There’s not much for camping on the way up the trail, only a couple small sites suitable for a rig or two. There is a large open area at the end of the trail, but I would not camp there, it’s extremely windy and open to the elements.

After Top of the World is Cottonwood Canyon, this is a lesser-used section of Kokopelli but a great detour from the main road.

Then you run Rose Garden Hill, the beginning of the trail is kind of tight and has a few off camber sections. The hill itself is steep, with ledges and loose rock covering everything; it is the hardest part of the entire Kokopelli trail!

Up to this point the trail is easy to follow, and there are small signs pointing the way at every intersection. After Rose Garden Hill that changes, and it gets harder to follow the trail. You’re pretty much on dirt roads and pavement from here on, and minimal signs to point the way. It’s really easy to loose your way from here on.

That last leg took us 14 hrs with 2 rigs just an FYI. We did run into some traffic in the Rose Garden Hill area. And my 4Runner disintegrating itself (rock crawler not used to higher speed stuff).

We got lost at the very end and had no cell coverage. Make sure you've got paper maps and somekind of backup to GPS.

DirtCO and I had a blast that trip! That trail is amazing and the scenery is beyond beautiful.

Unfortunately I was just informed my wife's work is now requiring her to work Monday Sept. 29th and half of Tuesday the 30th.

She's been trying to work it out but I don't think we have any real chance of it changing.

So we will be leaving Tuesday afternoon from Northern CO and be starting the trail the morning of Wednesday October 1st.

I'm really sorry and I know this probably will cause a lot of people to be unable to make it or at least with us on these dates. I thought I had the advantage of flexibility and now am forced to stick with October 1st as a start date.

If anyone can still make this happen just let me know!

No problem man I already figured after talking dates with you at the Jambo. Congrats on the home purchase man that's super exciting!

Unfortunately I think we are going to call off the Kokopelli leg and just shoot straight into Moab as we lost a couple days off our original plan. Still will be a great time I'm sure.

Lindsey and I are already talking about trying to put this Kokopelli thing together again next year though!
